How Summit County began
Summit County was created on March 3, 1840, from parts of Portage, Medina and Stark counties after a bill that passed the Ohio House by 34 votes to 31, and named for the 'Portage Summit,' the highest level of the Ohio and Erie Canal, near Akron. Before that the Cuyahoga valley held Ottawa, Mingo, Seneca and Lenape (Delaware) villages, among them the towns of the Ottawa chief Stigwanish near Boston and of the Lenape chief Netawatwees at Cuyahoga Falls, and the eight-mile Portage Path between the Cuyahoga and Tuscarawas rivers was the boundary of the treaties of Fort McIntosh (1785), Fort Harmar (1789) and Greenville (1795); older earthworks such as Fort Island in Copley Township and the fortified bluff between Hale Run and Furnace Run in Northampton survived into the 1880s. Connecticut settlers founded Hudson in 1799 and Western Reserve College there in 1826, Simon Perkins and Paul Williams laid out Akron at the canal summit in 1825, and Akron won the county seat from Cuyahoga Falls by a popular vote in April 1842 after a two-year fight. B. F. Goodrich (1870), Goodyear (1898), Firestone (1900) and General Tire (1915) made Akron the Rubber Capital of the World, and the county also saw Sojourner Truth's 1851 speech, the 1936 sit-down strike, the Navy's great airships and the 1935 founding of Alcoholics Anonymous. Today it is Ohio's fourth most populous county, about 540,000 people, with Cuyahoga Valley National Park running north from Akron along the old canal.
Akron was named seat in 1840. In May 1841 reviewing commissioners chose 'Summit City' (the Chuckery) and then, after a crowd jeered the site, drove their stakes at Cuyahoga Falls instead; county offices were split between the two towns until a popular vote in April 1842 confirmed Akron. The first jail was accepted in October 1843.

In the summer of 1944, people around Peninsula reported a huge snake in their fields and yards. One farmer said it was as thick as his thigh. The police chief led a hunt. The snake was never found.
