Life story
Gilbert Carpenter was born in Medina on April 17, 1836. He graduated from Western Reserve University in 1859 and passed the bar in 1861, but joined the Union Army that same year instead of practicing law.
He began as a second lieutenant in a 90-day regiment, then served with the 18th Ohio Infantry to the end of the war. In December 1862 he earned a brevet, or honorary, promotion to captain for gallant service at the Battle of Stones River.
He stayed in the Army, rising to lieutenant colonel in 1897. In the Spanish-American War he was a temporary brigadier general, and he led the 18th US Infantry in the Philippines. His permanent brigadier general commission came in December 1899, shortly before he retired.
He died in Montclair, New Jersey, in 1904 and is buried in Akron.
