Is there PFAS in the water?

Two rounds of testing for the forever chemicals: Ohio EPA sampled every community and non-transient system in 2020 for six PFAS, and EPA's fifth Unregulated Contaminant Monitoring Rule (UCMR 5) sampled every system serving more than 3,300 people, plus a lot of smaller ones, for 29 PFAS and lithium between 2023 and 2025. The map takes the system serving most of each ZIP and colors it by the highest PFOA or PFOS result (at the plant that serves the ZIP, where the system runs more than one) against the 4 nanogram-per-litre limit EPA set in 2024 (compliance is due in 2029, and EPA has proposed an optional two-year extension to 2031 and rescinding its limits on four other PFAS). Trace means other PFAS turned up below the limits; grey ZIPs are on private wells or on small systems that fell outside both rounds. Ohio EPA's own sampling status layer, updated through 2026, adds the latest round for the system, and the county's registered stock of PFAS firefighting foam is noted. The same UCMR 5 round measured lithium, shown on the card against EPA's draft 10 µg/L reference level.
