How Barberton began

Barberton is a planned industrial town founded in 1891 by Ohio Columbus (O.C.) Barber, who had built a fortune consolidating eleven match makers into the Diamond Match Company and relocated that company's works from Akron to his new town in 1894, where it was soon turning out 250 million matches a day. Barber laid out factories, worker housing, and a commercial downtown around Lake Anna, named for his daughter, and the town grew so fast from its 1891 incorporation population of about 1,800 that an Akron Beacon Journal reporter in 1893 dubbed it the 'Magic City.' Barber went on to build the 3,500-acre Anna-Dean Farm estate on the city's east side starting in 1908, anchored by a 52-room French Renaissance Revival mansion completed in 1909.

Before the town

No Native American village, mound, or treaty site specific to Barberton is documented in the sources consulted; the city was built on farmland in 1891.

Timeline

  1. — Early in the year O. C. Barber joins Charles Baird, John K. Robinson and Albert T. Paige to buy nearly 1,000 acres; later that year they sell half of their holdings to George W. Crouse, Sr. and a Pittsburgh syndicate headed by M. J. Alexander.
  2. — O.C. Barber founds and incorporates Barberton with a population of about 1,800, planning it around industry from the start.
  3. — In May the partners organize the Barberton Land and Improvement Company with Barber as president; the Barberton Inn, railroad station and bank are begun in the first year, and over a million dollars goes into permanent improvements within months.
  4. — Barberton has the National Sewer Pipe Company, American Strawboard Company, Sterling Boiler Company, Kirkum Art Tile Company, Creedmoor Cartridge Company, American Alumina Company and United Salt Company, employing together some 1,600 workers.
  5. — An Akron Beacon Journal reporter, struck by the town's rapid growth, dubs it the 'Magic City.'
  6. — The Diamond Match Company begins building its factory on the Cleveland, Akron and Columbus line just south of the station; when it is finished the whole Akron plant moves, adding nearly a thousand people to the town.
  7. — Barber relocates the Diamond Match Company, formed by merging eleven match makers, from Akron to Barberton, where it scales up to producing 250 million matches a day.

Stories

The Magic City on Lake Anna

O.C. Barber planned the town in 1891, laying out factory sites, worker housing, and a commercial downtown around Lake Anna, named for his only daughter, Anna Laura Barber. Starting from roughly 1,800 residents at incorporation, Barberton grew so quickly that when an Akron Beacon Journal reporter revisited it in 1893, he noted that it appeared to have grown by magic, hence the nickname 'Magic City'. In 1894 Barber moved the Diamond Match Company, which he had formed from a merger of eleven companies, from Akron to Barberton, where the plant was soon producing 250 million matches a day. Starting in 1908 he built the Anna-Dean Farm, a 3,500-acre model estate on the city's east side centered on a 52-room French Renaissance Revival mansion completed in 1909.

Building Barberton, 1890 to 1892

O. C. Barber, who as a boy in the 1850s had peddled matches his father dipped by hand in a little frame building at Middlebury, was president of the Diamond Match Company and of a hundred other companies when in 1890 he bought nearly a thousand acres of farmland with three partners. The Barberton Land and Improvement Company, organized in May 1891, set out to bring as many factories as possible, and the 1908 county history says the visitor of those first days was most impressed by how substantial everything looked: no rough pine store buildings, tents or slab saloons, because severe building restrictions were written into every deed, and the houses around the lake would be a credit to any city. The magnificent Barberton Inn, which the history says had no better rival in Ohio, was begun the first year, with the railroad station and bank. By 1892 seven big companies were already open. Barber's Diamond Match Company followed, bringing its whole Akron plant. Fire wiped out the Kirkum Art Tile plant, the Barberton Pottery Company went bankrupt, and one of the town's two banks failed, but the historian wrote that the successes dwarfed the failures.
