What this covers
This page explains what Cracked Buckeye's community layer collects when you vote, flag, sign up or contribute, why we collect it, what we ever make public, and how you can see, correct, export or delete it. It does not cover the sourced reference site itself, which reads and stores nothing about you.
What we collect, and why
| What | Why |
|---|---|
| Account details: email, username, name, street address, city, ZIP code, phone, and your expertise or connection to a place | To verify contributors and to contact them about what they send in |
| Votes and flags from visitors without an account | A random id kept in a cookie and a salted hash of your IP address, never the address itself, so we can stop the same visitor from voting twice and slow down abuse |
| Photos you upload | Published alongside your contribution once approved; the camera and location data (EXIF, GPS) built into the file is stripped before publication |
| Votes, flags and contributions tied to your account | To show your history in My contributions and to credit approved work to your public name |
What is public, and what never is
Public, once you choose to contribute: your public name (full name, or first name and last initial, your choice), your stated expertise, your city, and anything you contribute that a moderator approves.
Never public: your email address, your street address, and your phone number. They are collected only to verify you and to reach you, and they are never shown to other visitors or included in anything the site publishes.
Where your data lives
Everything is stored on Cracked Buckeye's own hosting account in the United States, not with a third-party analytics or marketing service. Street addresses and phone numbers are encrypted at rest. We do not sell your data, and we do not share it with anyone else, except when the law requires it.
How long we keep it
We keep your account details for as long as your account exists. If you delete your account, we remove your name, email, address and phone number right away. Anything you contributed that was already approved stays on the site, credited to "a former member" instead of your name.
Seeing, correcting, exporting or deleting your data
Sign in and open your account settings to see and correct your details, export what we hold about you, or delete your account. You can also ask by email at hello@crackedbuckeye.com, and we will handle it by hand.
Children
Cracked Buckeye's community layer is for adults: you must be 18 or older to create an account. It is not directed at children, and we do not knowingly collect information from anyone under 13. If we learn that an account belongs to someone under 18, we will delete it.
Changes to this policy
If we change what we collect or how we use it, we will update this page. A significant change will be noted here with a date.
