How Copley Township, Summit County began
The township's first settler was Jonah Turner, a Pennsylvania-born veteran of Maj. Croghan's battalion, who in 1814 built a small log cabin on the Stony Ridge, having marked the spot years earlier while marching through as a soldier and resolving to settle there if he survived the war; William Green arrived the same year. The 1881 county history gives a fuller and different naming account than later sources: the township was informally called 'Greenfield' after proprietor Gardner Green, its largest original landowner, then renamed Copley for an unrecorded reason in honor of Green's own wife, whose maiden name was Copley, rather than for its geographic position as later sources state. Copley organized as a distinct township, separating from the larger Wolf Creek Township (which also comprised Norton, Wadsworth, Sharon, Guilford and Montville), in July 1819, with its first election held in Allen Bosworth's barn. A post office called Copley Centre opened in 1835, was renamed Copley in 1841, and operated until 1957. The township produced social reformer and author Delia L. Weatherby (1843-1916) and, in the modern era, actress Carrie Coon (born 1981).

Where the name comes from
Wikipedia states Copley Center took its name from its location near the geographical center of the township, and was also known as Greenfield before the name Copley settled. The 1881 county history gives a different, more specific account: the township was informally called 'Greenfield' for proprietor Gardner Green, its largest original landowner from Connecticut, and was afterward renamed Copley, for an unrecorded reason, in honor of Green's own wife, whose maiden name was Copley.
Before the town
No Native village, trail or treaty site specific to Copley Township is documented in the sources consulted. The 1881 county history notes only a large mound on the farm of William Wagner, 'supposed by some to have been built by the Mound-Builders, and by others to have been formed by natural means during the Glacial epoch'; the question is left open there and no excavation or date is reported. The township lies in the Western Reserve part of Summit County opened to settlement by the 1785 Treaty of Fort McIntosh and the 1795 Treaty of Greenville.

Timeline
- — Jonah Turner, a Pennsylvania-born veteran of Maj. Croghan's battalion, builds the township's first log cabin on the Stony Ridge, at the site where his unit had once camped; William Green also arrives this year.
- — Samuel Hawkins arrives from Vermont and settles in the northwest corner; his son George Washington Hawkins, born December 29, is the first white child born in Copley.

Stories
A battlefield promise kept
Jonah Turner's connection to Copley began years before he ever settled there. As a young soldier marching through the area with Maj. Croghan's battalion, probably during the War of 1812, Turner's unit camped for a time near a stretch of high ground known as the Stony Ridge. According to the 1881 county history, Turner resolved then and there that if he survived the war, he would come back and make his home on that very spot. He kept his word: in 1814 he returned, built a small log cabin on the ridge east of what became Miller's Tavern, and became Copley Township's first settler, living there until his death. The township he helped found would go through two names of its own before settling, first called Greenfield for landowner Gardner Green, then renamed Copley, by the 1881 county history's account, for Green's wife, whose maiden name supplied the word that has identified the township ever since.
The first temperance pledge in Ohio
By the late 1820s Copley had several large distilleries, which supplied whisky for the farms and the canal trade and, in the words of the county historian, numbered their victims by the millions. In 1828 the churches recommended a day of fasting and prayer against intemperance, and on it a crowd filled the old log school-house in the northwest corner of the township. Someone asked whether it was consistent for Christians to pray against a sin while their actions favored it, and the question led to a committee and a constitution. On January 29, 1829, the meeting adopted what was said on good authority to be the first temperance constitution drafted and adopted in Ohio, 'The First Temperance Society of Medina County,' believed to be the work of John Codding of Coddingville. Its members pledged not to use ardent spirits except as medicine; the first signers were Lawrence Moore, John Codding, Burt Codding and Charles Goodwin. The historian admitted it did not noticeably cut consumption, and the Davis distillery ran for thirty more years.
Lawrence Moore, sailor and squire
Lawrence Moore, a Scot who came to America in 1797, was a sailor, and soon after landing was impressed aboard the British frigate Tartar, where he served six years until he bought his release for $1,225. He built a small log cabin on Lot 1 of Copley in 1816 and became its first justice of the peace, serving under Wolf Creek Township and then Copley. His first lawsuit involved a borrowed spinning wheel between two neighbours' wives, and he settled it before trial by advising Mrs. Point: 'You keep the grass too well trod between your houses; let it grow thicker, and you will agree better.' When Gat Yale was prosecuted before him for shooting a bear on a Sunday, Moore fined him one dollar. Moore also built a saw mill on Yellow Creek about 1830 and was the third name on the temperance pledge.
