How Cuyahoga Falls began

Water power at the falls of the Cuyahoga was first improved in 1812 by Kelsey & Wilcox, who built a dam and grist- and saw-mills at what became known as the 'old village'; William Wetmore's family bought that property after the War of 1812. The 1881 county history dates the true founding of Cuyahoga Falls to April 1825, when William Wetmore Jr. and his brother Henry, acting for the firm Stow & Wetmores (with Middletown, Connecticut proprietor Joshua Stow as nominal partner), built a new dam and mills downstream, while Henry Newberry simultaneously improved the lower part of the village; the community's first name was Manchester, changed to Cuyahoga Falls because Ohio already had other towns of that name. Elkanah Richardson first laid out the town in 1825, later re-surveyed by Birdsey Booth, and the town cycled between village, township (1853), and city (1868) government before settling into steady growth on water-powered mills. In 1986 Cuyahoga Falls carried out Ohio's first city-township merger, absorbing Northampton Township, and it is today Summit County's second-largest city.

Where the name comes from

First known as Manchester, the town was renamed Cuyahoga Falls, since Ohio already had other towns named Manchester and the falls of the Cuyahoga River within its limits, where the stream has cut an 80-to-100-foot sandstone channel over two miles, were seen as too valuable a namesake to pass up.

Before the town

No Native American village, mound, or treaty site specific to Cuyahoga Falls is documented in the sources consulted. The city lies on the Cuyahoga River a short distance downstream from the Portage Path in Akron and from the historic Native travel corridor connecting the Cuyahoga to the Tuscarawas River, used by Native people and traders to carry canoes and furs between the two watersheds; a U.S. military post and 'navy yard' was later built on this portage, supplied in part by lumber from the 'old village' saw-mill.

Timeline

  1. — Kelsey & Wilcox build a dam and grist- and saw-mills across the Cuyahoga at the future railroad-bridge site, founding the 'old village'; William Wetmore is appointed Commissary of a U.S. military post on the nearby Portage Path.
  2. — On April 1, William Wetmore Jr. and his brother Henry come from Silver Lake to the site of the future village; the family begins building a new dam, saw-mill, flour-mill and linseed-oil mill, completed in 1825-26, while Henry Newberry improves the lower part of the village the same year.
  3. — Judge Richardson lays out the village proper; a flood later that year destroys the original settlement when Wetmore's new dam fails.
  4. — Stow & Wetmores complete a paper-mill on December 8, the first mill in Ohio to make paper by gathering pulp on a cylinder rather than by hand.
  5. — A flood carries away Henry Newberry's oil-mill on the east side of the river; a new mill is put up immediately.

Stories

A dam, a flood, and a fresh start

William Wetmore staked his settlement on the water power of the Cuyahoga River's falls in 1812, Wikipedia says, building the flour, oil, and saw mills that gave the young town its purpose (the 1881 county history credits the first dam and mills of 1812 to Kelsey & Wilcox). Growth was interrupted in 1826, the same year Judge Richardson finally platted a formal village: Wetmore had just built a new dam to power the mills when it gave way, and the resulting flood destroyed the original settlement. The town rebuilt, incorporated as Manchester and then, at the Post Office's insistence, as Cuyahoga Falls, and kept enough momentum to make a serious run at the Summit County seat in 1841, though voters ultimately chose Akron. The town's early willingness to rebuild after the flood set a pattern that outlasted the original mills: by the 1980s Cuyahoga Falls was ambitious enough in another direction to carry out Ohio's first city-township merger, absorbing Northampton Township in 1986.

The Wetmore brothers, in their own words

The 1881 county history preserves a first-person account by Henry Wetmore of the village's true beginning: 'On the 1st day of April, 1825, Brother William and I came to what is now the village of Cuyahoga Falls from the banks of Silver Lake, in the township of Stow. We cut away the alders on the bank of the river ... to take a look at the river, and the wild scenery on each side. The next day Father came to line out the 210 acres ... and to take a level of the fall of the river, to ascertain the height of the dam he was to build. All around was an unbroken forest. On the 30th of April we had a house up.' By December the brothers, trading as Stow & Wetmores with Connecticut proprietor Joshua Stow, had finished a paper-mill that Henry Wetmore called the first in Ohio to make paper by machine rather than by hand-dipped pulp. The mills did not all last: the flouring-mill later burned and the oil-mill closed for lack of seed, but the settlement the Wetmore brothers built from an unbroken forest in a single month became the village, and later the city, that still bears the falls' name.
