How Stow began

Stow takes its name from Joshua Stow, a Connecticut land agent who surveyed the Western Reserve with Moses Cleaveland's 1796 expedition, served as Commissary of the exploring party (the first storehouse at Conneaut was named 'Stow Castle' in his honor), and later financed the township's development, though he never lived there himself. The 1881 county history confirms the first cabin was built by a Virginia squatter named William Walker on Lot 89 in 1802 or 1803, where he lived alone until Joshua Stow arrived in 1804 to have the township surveyed by Joseph Darrow, after which William Wetmore, Gregory Powers and other settlers arrived; by 1810 there were fifteen or twenty families in the township. The township organized in 1808 as part of the original Portage County, transferred to the newly created Summit County in 1840, incorporated as a village in 1957, and became a city after the 1960 census. Stow's original 25-square-mile township eventually gave rise to neighboring Munroe Falls, Cuyahoga Falls, and Silver Lake.

Where the name comes from

Named for Joshua Stow of Middletown, Connecticut, the township's original proprietor, who surveyed the Western Reserve as part of Moses Cleaveland's 1796 expedition and invested time and money developing the township he never personally lived in. He served as Commissary of that exploring party, and the first storehouse the party built, at Conneaut, was named 'Stow Castle' in his honor.

Before the town

No Native American village, mound, or treaty site specific to Stow is documented in the sources consulted. Stow lies within the Connecticut Western Reserve, land opened to settlement by the 1785 Treaty of Fort McIntosh and confirmed by the 1795 Treaty of Greenville.

Timeline

  1. — Joshua Stow surveys the Connecticut Western Reserve as part of Moses Cleaveland's expedition, serving as Commissary, later becoming proprietor of the township that takes his name.
  2. — William Walker, a Virginian who had come to Hudson the year before, builds the township's first cabin, a small round-log structure on Lot 89 in the northeast corner, and lives there alone as a squatter.

Stories

A settler in the wrong township

William Walker built his cabin in Stow in 1802, two years before anyone, including Walker himself, could say for certain which township he was in. The Western Reserve's surveyors had left the boundary between Stow and neighboring Hudson unresolved on the ground, and Walker assumed he had settled in Hudson. Only when the township was formally surveyed in 1804 did the line fall where it did, placing Walker's homestead inside Stow after all. That same year the township's actual proprietor, Joshua Stow, sent his land agent William Wetmore out from Connecticut with a party of settlers to build near the township's center, giving Stow its first real settlement push even though Joshua Stow himself, who had helped survey the whole Western Reserve in 1796, never lived on the land that carries his name.

A squatter alone in the woods

For roughly two years, the entire white population of what would become Stow Township was one man: William Walker, a Virginian who had already spent a year in neighboring Hudson before building a small, round-log squatter's cabin in the northeast corner of the township, on Lot 89, around 1802 or 1803. He had no legal claim to the land and no neighbors; the 1881 county history notes he 'remained alone until 1804,' when proprietor Joshua Stow finally arrived at Hudson to arrange for the township's formal survey. That survey, completed by Joseph Darrow, brought William Wetmore, Gregory Powers and several other families in almost immediately afterward, most of them settling further south near what became Stow Corners, the township's original village center. By 1810 fifteen to twenty families called Stow home, a rapid transformation from the single squatter's cabin of less than a decade before.
