How Sagamore Hills Township, Summit County began
The land that became Sagamore Hills was first settled in 1806 by Isaac Bacon of Boston, who bought 160 acres near what is now North Boyden and Valley View roads, and it was part of the original Northfield Township organized in 1814/1819. When Northfield Village, incorporated in 1912 as one of Ohio's wealthiest municipalities, moved to fund a $200,000 waterworks favoring its urbanized north end, wealthy southern estate owners including rubber magnate C.W. Seiberling, financier Cyrus Eaton, and W.G. Marshall petitioned to break away, and on October 21, 1930, voters approved detachment 123 to 78, creating the Village of Sagamore Hills. Financial hardship forced a conversion from village to township government on April 15, 1947, and from 1974 to 1994 neighboring Richfield hosted the Richfield Coliseum, home to the Cleveland Cavaliers and other pro teams, within a few miles of the township.
Settled 1806 (Isaac Bacon), incorporated part of Northfield Township from 1814/1819; Sagamore Hills Village formed October 21, 1930; township status April 15, 1947, by Isaac Bacon; separation led by C.W. Seiberling, Cyrus Eaton, and W.G. Marshall.
Where the name comes from
No source consulted gives a specific naming account for 'Sagamore Hills' beyond the word sagamore, a term for a Native chief or leader among northeastern Algonquian-speaking peoples; the neighboring original settlement was named Northfield by early settler Jeremiah Cranmer after a Connecticut town.
Before the town
No Native American village, mound, or treaty site specific to Sagamore Hills Township is documented in the sources consulted, though the township's own name, meaning a Native chief or leader in northeastern Algonquian languages, was adopted for the modern community without a documented site-specific connection. The area lies within the Connecticut Western Reserve, land opened to settlement by the 1785 Treaty of Fort McIntosh and confirmed by the 1795 Treaty of Greenville.
Nations recorded here: Lenape (Delaware).

Stories
Wealthy estates secede from the waterworks
By 1930, Northfield Village, incorporated in 1912 out of the old Northfield Township, ranked among Ohio's wealthiest municipalities, its rolls including rubber industrialist C.W. Seiberling and financier Cyrus Eaton, who kept large estates in the township's rural south end. When the village government proposed a $200,000 bond to build a waterworks that would mainly benefit the more urbanized north side, Seiberling, Eaton, and fellow estate owner W.G. Marshall balked at paying for infrastructure they wouldn't use and petitioned for their end of the township to break away. Voters in the affected area approved the split on October 21, 1930, by a vote of 123 to 78, and the new Village of Sagamore Hills was born from what was, in effect, a tax revolt by some of the wealthiest men in Ohio. The new village's independence proved harder to sustain than its founders expected: financial strain forced Sagamore Hills to give up village government and become a township in 1947, a more modest political shape it has kept ever since.
