Ohio's most famous dead mall is now Amazon

Rolling Acres Mall in Akron from the air: 1970, 1990, 1995 and today. It opened on Aug. 6, 1975, and at its peak had more than 150 stores and five anchors: Sears, JCPenney, Montgomery Ward (later Higbee's and Dillard's), O'Neil's (later May Company, Kaufmann's and Macy's) and Target. Tenants left through the 1990s and 2000s; the power was cut on Oct. 31, 2008, and the empty mall became one of the internet's most famous dead malls. It came down from 2016 to 2019. Amazon's AKC1 warehouse opened on the site on Nov. 1, 2020. The former Sears building is the only original piece still standing.
