How Macedonia began

Macedonia's name comes from the New Testament: divinity students from Western Reserve College in nearby Hudson who preached at a hamlet about six miles north of that town recalled the apostle Paul's vision in Acts 16:10, 'we sought to go to Macedonia, concluding that the Lord had called us to preach the gospel to them,' and the name stuck to the settlement in the early 1800s. The village itself grew slowly at first: Abraham Cranmer built its first house, a hewed-log building, in 1824, followed by others in the early 1830s, but no store opened until 1852, when Odell, Price & Co. began a brisk trade that, at its peak, shipped roughly 175,000 pounds of cheese from 60 area dairies out of Macedonia each season. The community recorded just 219 residents in 1880 and 581 in 1920, before postwar suburban growth around Akron and Cleveland pushed its population to 6,375 by 1970 and 12,168 by 2020. Today Macedonia markets itself as 'The Crossroads of Northeast Ohio' for its position at the junction of Interstates 271 and 80.

Settled early 1800s (named); 1824 (Abraham Cranmer builds the first house in the village itself).

Where the name comes from

Named for the biblical Macedonia of Acts 16:10, after divinity students from Western Reserve College in Hudson who preached in the settlement recalled the apostle Paul's vision calling him to Macedonia to preach the gospel.

Before the town

No Native American village, mound, or treaty site specific to Macedonia itself is documented in the sources consulted, though the neighboring Northfield Township area records a Native encampment on first settler Isaac Bacon's farm from 1807 onward. The area lies within the Connecticut Western Reserve, land opened to settlement by the 1785 Treaty of Fort McIntosh and confirmed by the 1795 Treaty of Greenville.

Nations recorded here: Lenape (Delaware).

Timeline

  1. — Western Reserve College divinity students preaching at a hamlet six miles north of Hudson give it the name Macedonia after Acts 16:10.
  2. — Abraham Cranmer builds the first house in the village, a hewed-log building in the northeastern part; it stands until 1854.
  3. — Edwin Hutchinson builds the second house in the village, near the church; George Shattuck and Erastus Beldin build dwellings around the same time.
  4. — Odell, Price & Co. bring the village's first stock of goods, about $4,000 worth, to a storeroom built the year before by John Odell; L. G. Odell becomes the village's first postmaster.
  5. — At its peak, the Odell firm handles the cheese and butter of 60 area dairies, shipping roughly 175,000 pounds of cheese and 7,000 pounds of butter out of Macedonia each season, from May to mid-September.
  6. — The community records 219 residents.
  7. — Population reaches 581.
  8. — Population grows to 6,375 amid postwar suburban expansion.
  9. — The U.S. Census records 12,168 residents.

Stories

A call to preach gives a town its name

Macedonia's name did not come from a founder or a land company but from a Bible verse, carried into Summit County by divinity students at Western Reserve College in Hudson. Sent out to preach in a hamlet about six miles north of the college in the early 1800s, the students reached for the book of Acts, where the apostle Paul describes a vision urging him toward Macedonia, in Paul's words, 'we sought to go to Macedonia, concluding that the Lord had called us to preach the gospel to them.' The comparison between their own missionary trip and Paul's stuck as a name for the settlement itself. The town it named grew slowly for more than a century, counting only 219 people in 1880 and 581 in 1920, before the automobile-age suburbanization of the Akron and Cleveland areas after World War II turned the quiet crossroads into a fast-growing suburb, its population more than tenfold from 1920 to 1970 alone.

A dairy trade that outgrew its merchants

For a name from scripture, Macedonia's actual 19th-century economy was built on something far more prosaic: cheese. The village had no store at all until 1852, when the firm of Odell, Price & Co. put about $4,000 of goods into a new storeroom and began buying farm produce from the surrounding countryside. The dairy trade they built up became remarkable by the standards of a small Summit County crossroads: at its peak, the firm and its successors handled the output of sixty area dairies, each contributing roughly twenty pounds of cheese a day, for a total the 1881 county history put at about 175,000 pounds of cheese and 7,000 pounds of combined cheese and butter shipped out of Macedonia every season, from May through mid-September. The trade proved better at attracting merchants than at keeping them: ownership of the Macedonia store changed hands at least a dozen times between 1852 and 1879, through failures, partnerships and buyouts, the historian noting dryly that Macedonia's merchants 'spring up from all quarters, like mushrooms from a hot-bed.'

Mostly estimated. Only 9% of these days come from a gauge standing inside Macedonia - the rest are worked out from the nearest gauges around it, so read them as close estimates rather than readings.

38,972 days of records, 1871-01-01 to 2026-10-30. Source: NOAA NCEI GHCN-Daily, 3,240 gauges in and around Ohio. A day is "gauged" when a gauge standing inside the boundary reported it, and the value is the mean of those gauges. Otherwise it is interpolated by inverse distance from every gauge reporting within 50 miles. Nothing is carried forward, back-filled or smoothed. Against NOAA nClimDiv county monthly precipitation over 136,848 complete county-months (checked 2026-11-01): correlation 0.9515, median absolute difference 0.217 in a month. Built 2026-11-01 from the Cracked Buckeye precipitation archive. Snow is the softer number — snowfall is measured by hand with a ruler, no agency publishes a gridded county snowfall series, and blowing snow defeats every observer.

Facilities are placed on the map from Ohio EPA's own map layers, EPA's Facility Registry, coordinates written in the filings, or a geocoded street address. A permit filed under a private person's name (most are household septic systems) is counted but never named, placed or linked; licenses for individual workers and open-burning notices are left out entirely.
