How Tallmadge began
Reverend David Bacon founded Tallmadge in 1807, laying it out on a New England model around a central square, the Tallmadge Circle, from which eight roads radiate in cardinal and ordinal directions, a design that survives today as one of the most distinctive town plans in the Western Reserve. But the 1881 county history records that the actual first cabin-builder, in March or April 1807, was a settler named Boosinger, not Bacon; the credit given to Bacon at the township's 1857 semi-centennial celebration was disputed at the time by pioneers who remembered Boosinger's earlier arrival, though Bacon's influence in recruiting settlers and shaping the community's Puritan character was unquestioned. Before reaching Tallmadge, Bacon had spent 1800-1804 as a Connecticut Missionary Society missionary among Native people near Lake Erie, Detroit and Mackinac. The town took its name from Benjamin Tallmadge, a Revolutionary War officer and local landowner, and incorporated as a city in 1936, making it the second-oldest incorporated community in Summit County after Hudson. The 1825 Tallmadge Church at the Circle's edge appeared on the cover of Life magazine on November 20, 1944, and the city kept Prohibition-era alcohol restrictions on the books, banning sales until the early 1990s and public consumption until 2001.
Settled March or April 1807 (Boosinger, per the 1881 county history's disputed-priority account); Rev. David Bacon arrived and platted the town the same year and is credited historically as founder, platted 1807, incorporated 1936, by Reverend David Bacon (traditional credit); first actual settler was Boosinger, per the 1881 county history.
Where the name comes from
Named for Benjamin Tallmadge, a Revolutionary War officer and local landowner in the Connecticut Land Company.
Before the town
No Native American village, mound, or treaty site specific to Tallmadge itself is documented in the sources consulted. Tallmadge lies within the Connecticut Western Reserve, land opened to settlement by the 1785 Treaty of Fort McIntosh and confirmed by the 1795 Treaty of Greenville. Notably, the town's founder, Rev. David Bacon, spent 1800 to 1804 as a Connecticut Missionary Society missionary among Native people near Lake Erie, traveling to Detroit and Mackinac before settling on the Western Reserve.
Nations recorded here: Lenape (Delaware).
Timeline
- — Rev. David Bacon serves as a Connecticut Missionary Society missionary to Native people near Lake Erie, based first at Detroit (where his eldest son, future theologian Leonard Bacon, is born in 1802) and later at Mackinac.
- — Boosinger builds the township's first cabin in March or April, making him, per the 1881 county history, the true first settler, though Rev. David Bacon is later credited with founding Tallmadge on a New England plan centered on a radiating traffic circle.
- — Elizur Wright, a wealthy Connecticut farmer, visits his newly purchased 3,000 acres in Tallmadge and arranges to clear land and build a house before returning in 1810 with his family.
- — News of Hull's surrender at Detroit reaches a Tallmadge congregation worshiping in Elizur Wright's barn; the men disperse and prepare within the day to march to defend Cleveland before a second dispatch says the city is not in immediate danger.
- — The Tallmadge Church is built on the Circle.
- — At the township's semi-centennial celebration, Hon. E. N. Sill credits Rev. David Bacon with the first settlement, a claim several pioneers present dispute in favor of Boosinger.
- — Akron builds the Lake Rockwell Reservoir on the upper Cuyahoga River, the primary water source that later serves Tallmadge.
- — Tallmadge incorporates as a city, the second-oldest incorporated community in Summit County after Hudson.
- — The 1825 Tallmadge Church appears on the cover of Life magazine on November 20.
- — Tallmadge repeals its longstanding ban on public alcohol consumption, having already lifted its sales ban in the early 1990s.
Stories
A New England circle in Ohio
When Reverend David Bacon laid out Tallmadge in 1807, he built it around a device rare anywhere else in the Western Reserve: a central circle with eight roads radiating outward like spokes, oriented to the cardinal and ordinal compass points. The plan announced, as clearly as any building could, that New England town-planning ideas had come west with the Connecticut settlers who founded it, and it gave the community its lasting name for the geographic feature at its heart, the Tallmadge Circle. The church built at the Circle's edge in 1825 became, unexpectedly, a national symbol of small-town American religious life when Life magazine put it on its cover on November 20, 1944, in the middle of the Second World War. The town held onto older habits as tightly as it held onto its street plan: Tallmadge kept a ban on alcohol sales into the early 1990s and did not allow public drinking until 2001, a Prohibition-era holdover nearly seven decades after national Prohibition ended.
The settler history forgot
For fifty years, the story of Tallmadge's founding belonged entirely to Rev. David Bacon, the Connecticut missionary who platted the town's famous circle and recruited the Puritan-minded settlers who built its church and society. But the 1881 county history preserves a quieter dissent. At the township's fiftieth-anniversary celebration in 1857, when Hon. E. N. Sill publicly credited Bacon with the first settlement, several pioneers in the audience, people who had actually lived through those earliest months, objected on the spot. They were certain, and the historian later confirmed by interviewing surviving old settlers, that a man named Boosinger had built his cabin and moved his family in during March or April of 1807, before Bacon ever arrived. Soon after, Boosinger's wife gave birth to twins back in Ravenna, and when the infant son sickened and died weeks later, he was buried on his father's Tallmadge farm, the township's first recorded death, on land that never bore his name the way the town square bears Bacon's memory. Boosinger, not a churchgoing Bacon disciple, worshiped instead with Springfield Township's Presbyterians, sold his farm in 1836, and moved on to Illinois, where he died in 1862, a footnote to a settlement he arguably began.

Mostly estimated. Only 6% of these days come from a gauge standing inside Tallmadge - the rest are worked out from the nearest gauges around it, so read them as close estimates rather than readings.
43,183 days of records, 1893-01-01 to 2026-10-29. Source: NOAA NCEI GHCN-Daily, 3,240 gauges in and around Ohio. A day is "gauged" when a gauge standing inside the boundary reported it, and the value is the mean of those gauges. Otherwise it is interpolated by inverse distance from every gauge reporting within 50 miles. Nothing is carried forward, back-filled or smoothed. Against NOAA nClimDiv county monthly precipitation over 136,848 complete county-months (checked 2026-10-31): correlation 0.9515, median absolute difference 0.217 in a month. Built 2026-10-31 from the Cracked Buckeye precipitation archive. Snow is the softer number — snowfall is measured by hand with a ruler, no agency publishes a gridded county snowfall series, and blowing snow defeats every observer.
