How Twinsburg began

Ethan Alling, sent ahead at age 16 by his father Lewis Alling in March 1817 to begin clearing 400 newly purchased acres, was among the township's first settlers and later became its postmaster, merchant and stagecoach operator. Twinsburg took its name from identical twin brothers Moses and Aaron Wilcox, who did not move to the township until 1823 but who offered six acres for a public square and $20 toward a schoolhouse if the township would take the name Twinsburg; the 1881 county history dates the offer to 1819 and Wikipedia to 1818. Before that the settlement was known as Millsville. The Twinsburg post office opened in 1825, and the first Twins Days festival was held in 1976.

Where the name comes from

Named for identical twin brothers Moses and Aaron Wilcox, who offered to donate 6 acres of land and money for a school if the community would take the name Twinsburg; residents agreed. Wikipedia dates the offer to 1818, while the 1881 county history dates the actual renaming to 1819 and notes the settlement had previously been called Millsville, or known only by its survey range and number; the Wilcox twins themselves did not move to the township until 1823, four years after it took their name.

Before the town

No Native American village, mound, or treaty site specific to Twinsburg is documented. Twinsburg lies within the Connecticut Western Reserve, land opened to settlement by the 1785 Treaty of Fort McIntosh and confirmed by the 1795 Treaty of Greenville.

Timeline

  1. — General Moses Cleaveland, exploring up the Cuyahoga with the boatman Joseph Tinker, names Tinker's Creek, which drains Twinsburg, for Tinker; Tinker drowns the next year when his boat capsizes on the lake.
  2. — Ethan Alling, age 16, and three hired men arrive in March to begin clearing his father Lewis Alling's newly purchased 400 acres; the elder Alling and the rest of the family arrive that July.
  3. — On April 15 Ethan Alling and three hired men move into a half-finished log cabin by the falls on Tinker's Creek; the family arrives July 7, and in late May Elisha Loomis, a sailor who had twice circled the world, E. W. Mather and Lester Davis build a cabin at Loomis Mills. On July 1 Lewis Alling Jr. and Gideon Thompson arrive with 104 merino sheep driven 660 miles in thirty days; wolves, dogs and disease soon destroy the flock.
  4. — E. W. Mather builds a frame grist-mill at the falls, across the creek from Loomis's 1817 saw-mill.
  5. — The township organizes and is renamed Twinsburg, honoring twin brothers Moses and Aaron Wilcox, who offer six acres for a public square and $20 toward the first schoolhouse though they have not yet settled there themselves (per the 1881 county history; Wikipedia dates the Wilcox offer to 1818).
  6. — On March 19 Emery W. Alger marries Eliza Dodge, the township's first wedding, with Lewis Alling as the officiating justice; in 1822 a log schoolhouse is built on the Center square.
  7. — The Wilcox twins finally move to Twinsburg.
  8. — The Twinsburg post office opens under Ethan Alling, who also serves as stagecoach operator, merchant, and hotel proprietor.
  9. — Ethan Alling begins dairying with twenty-two cows, selling butter in Akron to canal laborers at 8 cents a pound; cheese-making follows in 1828 and by 1880 the township's dairy sales approach $100,000.
  10. — Rev. Samuel Bissell, a Yale graduate who had kept a private school at Aurora, takes charge of the Congregational society at Twinsburg and founds the Twinsburg Institute, which operates for more than half a century.
  11. — A temperance society organized at Twinsburg about this year has 224 members three years later and closes the township's liquor sellers.
  12. — Twinsburg has 1,240 people; the count is 4,098 in 1960, 9,606 in 1990 and 17,006 in 2000.
  13. — The Twinsburg Historical Society is founded to preserve the town's pioneer-era artifacts and documents.
  14. — Twinsburg holds its first Twins Days festival, which grows into the world's largest annual gathering of twins.
  15. — The Old School, the city's only school building until 1957, closes as a public school; it later houses a Kent State campus and has since been demolished.
  16. — The census counts 19,248 residents; the Twinsburg City School District has five schools.

Stories

Two brothers who did everything alike

Moses and Aaron Wilcox, who owned several thousand acres in the north of Millsville Township, did not move there until 1823, but in 1819 they offered six acres at the center for a public square and $20 toward the first schoolhouse if the township would take the name Twinsburg. The offer was accepted, and Perrin's 1881 county history quotes an older description of the pair: they resembled each other so closely that only intimate friends could tell them apart; they married sisters, Huldah and Mabel Lord of Killingworth, Connecticut; they had an equal number of children, held all their property in common, wrote alike, thought alike, dressed alike, and, the account says, were taken sick on the same day with the same disease, died on the same day, and were buried in the same graveyard. The 1881 historian calls the coincidence of resemblance one that had probably never occurred before. Elijah W. Bronson had been the twins' real estate agent before they came. Wikipedia dates the offer to 1818 and the first Twins Days festival to 1976.
