The history under the water: the valley before, the dam, the stories. All Ohio lakes

How Norton began

Norton Township organized in 1818 out of Wolf Creek Township, named for Birdseye (Birdsey) Norton, one of the township's original land owners; James Robinson and John Cahow, who arrived around 1810, purchased adjoining lots and it is disputed locally which of the two built the township's first cabin, with Cahow building the township's first tavern in 1812 on the old Indian trail from Portage to the Scioto. The 1881 county history names all seven of the township's hamlets: New Portage, Loyal Oak, Western Star, Dennison (originally Sherman post office), Johnson's Corners, Hametown and Norton Center; Johnson's Corners grew up around settler Thomas Johnson's saw and grist mills built in the 1820s, and Western Star, where Nathan Seiberling bought a business in 1831, incorporated as its own village in 1842. Residents voted to incorporate Norton as a whole in 1961, defeating the measure once before it passed, when Richard DuFore became the first village mayor; Norton became a city on January 11, 1969 after a November 1968 general election.

Settled 1810 (James Robinson and John Cahow), platted surveyed by Joseph Darrow and others, 8-9 years before the 1818 organization, incorporated township organized 1818 (Wolf Creek Township predecessor organized 1816); Western Star village 1842; Norton village 1961; city January 11, 1969, by township named for Birdseye Norton.

Where the name comes from

Named for Birdsey Norton, one of the original owners of the township, at its formation in 1818; the township had first been part of the larger Wolf Creek Township, organized in 1816, which also covered present Copley and parts of Medina County.

Before the town

No Native American village, mound, or treaty site specific to Norton is documented in the sources consulted, though the 1881 county history notes that John Cahow's early tavern stood on 'the great trail from old Portage, on the Cuyahoga, to the Scioto,' a Native travel corridor the township's first white road followed. The township lies within the area opened to settlement by the 1795 Treaty of Greenville.

Nations recorded here: Lenape (Delaware).

Stories

Seven hamlets under one township

Before it became a single city in 1969, Norton Township was, as the 1881 county history put it, 'well supplied with villages, no less than seven being wholly or in part included in its territory': New Portage near the east line; Loyal Oak in the north, named for brothers Nathan and Lyman Bates who each built a cabin at the crossroads; Western Star straddling the Medina County line, which grew enough to incorporate on its own in 1842; Dennison, a railroad-era coal town first called Sherman post office; Johnson's Corners, built up around settler Thomas Johnson's saw and grist mills; Hametown, a coal-mining hamlet with a store and two saloons; and Norton Center itself, at the township's geographic middle. Each hamlet had its own store, mill or church, and the pattern of scattered crossroads settlements, rather than one town, persisted for more than a century before all of Norton finally voted to incorporate as a single municipality in 1961.

Mostly estimated. Only 3% of these days come from a gauge standing inside Norton - the rest are worked out from the nearest gauges around it, so read them as close estimates rather than readings.

48,624 days of records, 1893-01-01 to 2026-10-29. Source: NOAA NCEI GHCN-Daily, 3,240 gauges in and around Ohio. A day is "gauged" when a gauge standing inside the boundary reported it, and the value is the mean of those gauges. Otherwise it is interpolated by inverse distance from every gauge reporting within 50 miles. Nothing is carried forward, back-filled or smoothed. Against NOAA nClimDiv county monthly precipitation over 136,848 complete county-months (checked 2026-10-31): correlation 0.9515, median absolute difference 0.217 in a month. Built 2026-10-31 from the Cracked Buckeye precipitation archive. Snow is the softer number — snowfall is measured by hand with a ruler, no agency publishes a gridded county snowfall series, and blowing snow defeats every observer.

Facilities are placed on the map from Ohio EPA's own map layers, EPA's Facility Registry, coordinates written in the filings, or a geocoded street address. A permit filed under a private person's name (most are household septic systems) is counted but never named, placed or linked; licenses for individual workers and open-burning notices are left out entirely.
