How Richfield began

The 1881 county history names Launcelot Mays as the first white settler, in 1809, and details settlement by Connecticut Land Company purchasers such as Capt. Heman Oviatt. The name Richfield came from the local soil's richness; the 1881 history specifies it derived from a nutritious wild forage plant settlers called 'ox-balm' or 'rich-feed,' corrupted into 'Richfield' when the township organized in 1816. The village incorporated in 1967; in 1970 Mayor Kenneth Swan signed an ordinance declaring Richfield Village the first 'world city' in the United States, and from 1974 to 1994 the nearby Richfield Coliseum, built in neighboring Richfield Township, hosted the Cleveland Cavaliers (NBA) and Cleveland Barons (NHL).

Where the name comes from

Named for the richness of the local soil. The 1881 county history is more specific: the name derived from a wild forage weed that grew abundantly and was relished by livestock, called 'ox-balm' or, more commonly, 'rich-feed,' which by a slight corruption became 'Richfield.' The name was applied at the township's organization in 1816 by the Portage County commissioners (Richfield was then still part of Portage County).

No Native American village, mound, or treaty site specific to Richfield is documented in the sources consulted. The village lies within the Connecticut Western Reserve, land opened to settlement by the 1785 Treaty of Fort McIntosh and confirmed by the 1795 Treaty of Greenville.

Timeline

Stories

The great sleigh-ride of 1856

In an unusually snowy winter, a border township organized a run of four-horse sleighs carrying a homemade cotton banner, a yard square, painted with a mocking figure and the words 'You can't come it,' daring neighboring townships to turn out more sleighs than they had. The friendly rivalry escalated township by township until Richfield held the banner outright, and by March 14, 1856, it had grown into a three-county contest between Summit, Cuyahoga and Medina, staged in Richfield since it held the prize. Marshals counted 171 sleighs from Summit County, 151 from Cuyahoga and 140 from Medina, a total of 462 four- and six-horse sleighs in one procession that passed through to Akron in perfect order before an estimated five to ten thousand spectators. Summit's Hudson Township, with the most teams, carried the banner to Akron for safekeeping, only to lose it days later when Medina County returned with 185 sleighs and took the six-cent trophy home for good, closing out what the county history called 'the most remarkable sleigh-ride on record.'
