How Northfield Center Township, Summit County began
The land that became Northfield Center Township was first settled in 1807 by Isaac Bacon of Massachusetts, who arrived by covered wagon to a homestead on Valley View Road; the surrounding area, organized as 'Olde Northfield Township' (Town 5, Range 11 of the Western Reserve) at a May 21, 1819 organizational meeting, was prized by the Connecticut Land Company for its well-drained soil and its frontage on the navigable Cuyahoga River. Olde Northfield split apart over the 20th century: the eastern side broke away in 1905 to become Macedonia, the remaining township incorporated as Northfield Village in 1912, Sagamore Hills split off in 1932, and Northfield Center itself was established in 1935 when a further group of residents separated, leaving the four modern communities of Macedonia, Northfield Village, Sagamore Hills, and Northfield Center where one township had stood.

Where the name comes from
Perrin's 1881 county history says that when the settlers assembled to raise a log house near the cemetery and began to suggest names, Henry Wood wanted the township called York; other names were proposed, among them Northfield, suggested by Jeremiah Cranmer, and a vote selected Northfield.
Before the town
Perrin's 1881 county history records Native presence on the farm of the first settler, Isaac Bacon, in the early 1800s: almost every stream flowing into the Cuyahoga was the site of Indian encampments, from a single wigwam to several hundred people, and a small camp of three wigwams on Bacon's farm was used at stated seasons for many years, until the families took their final departure for the West. Six or seven Indians once entered Mrs. Bacon's cabin and drank her gallon of whisky. In the excitement of the War of 1812 an Indian was seen skulking in the woods and was told to leave; Bacon and Cranmer prepared to move their families to Hudson but returned. Henry Wood named Indian Creek for the parties he saw camped on it, and Indian Run rises near the northeast corner of the township and joins Brandywine Creek at Little York. Timeline
- — Isaac Bacon of Boston buys 160 acres (Lot 63) in Northfield, and in April 1807 comes with his family, raising his cabin alone in five days with skids, a rope and a yoke of oxen; no neighbour lives nearer than Tinker's Creek for three years.
- — Isaac Bacon of Massachusetts arrives by covered wagon and settles on the north side of Valley View Road, the area's first settler.
- — An infant daughter of the Bacons dies, the first death in the township.
- — Jeremiah Cranmer, Bacon's brother-in-law, arrives in June and builds a cabin on Lot 72, a half mile from Bacon's.
- — Henry Wood marries Esther Cranmer on September 22, the first wedding in Northfield; Wood, who lived to ninety-one, names Indian Creek for the Indian parties he saw camped on it.

Stories
One township becomes four
Olde Northfield Township began, in 1819, as a single unit of Western Reserve government prized by the Connecticut Land Company for its fertile, well-drained soil and its stretch of the navigable Cuyahoga River. It did not stay single for long by township standards: in 1905 the eastern side broke off to found Macedonia, and the remainder incorporated as Northfield Village in 1912. A dispute over who should pay for a new waterworks split off the wealthy estate district of Sagamore Hills in 1932, and in 1935 yet another group of residents separated to form Northfield Center itself. What one act of 1819 organization had joined together, a series of local disputes over money and representation pulled apart piece by piece over the following century, leaving the four communities of Macedonia, Northfield Village, Sagamore Hills, and Northfield Center standing today on the ground Isaac Bacon first settled in 1807.
Mrs. Bacon, the dog and the strange visitor
Isaac Bacon built his cabin alone in 1807, and for three years his family saw no neighbours. Mrs. Bacon told her children that for six months she saw no white woman's face but her own reflection in a pool. Perrin's 1881 county history preserves two of her frights. One day a party of six or seven Indians walked in uninvited, demanded whisky, and when she said she had none, found a gallon bottle themselves, drank it, and left with menacing grimaces, drawing their knives in the air toward her when she tried to stop them. Another day a dark-faced stranger arrived when Bacon was away, sat watching her with fierce eyes, and asked a boy to turn the grindstone while he sharpened his knife. At night he told her to put out the dog and go to bed; the dog, which slept in the house, growled and would not move. The man waited until morning and left, and the family ever after thought that the dog alone saved Mrs. Bacon. A small camp of three wigwams stood on Bacon's farm and the families returned to it each season until they left for the West.
