The history under the water: the valley before, the dam, the stories. All Ohio lakes

How Green began

Green Township was organized in 1809, then part of Stark County, and transferred into the newly created Summit County in 1840; through the 19th century it was farm country dotted with small hamlets, the largest being Greensburg, and by 1900 the township held five distinct settlements, its economy resting on crops and coal. John Kepler, a Pennsylvania-born blacksmith, made the first permanent Government-land purchase and settlement in the fall of 1809, though several squatter families including the Triplets, Cruzens and Dixons had lived temporarily on the township's Section 16 school land even earlier. Development shifted after about 1950, when farmers began selling land to residential builders, and by 1991 residents voted to merge the village of Green with the surrounding township, incorporating as the Village of Green that year and becoming a city in 1992 under its first mayor, John Torok. In 2016 Green fought the NEXUS natural-gas pipeline over its proximity to homes, a dispute that ended in a $7.5 million settlement in 2018.

Settled 1809 (John Kepler, first Government-land purchase and permanent settlement); squatter families present earlier, incorporated township organized 1809 (Stark County); transferred to Summit County 1840; village 1991; city 1992.

Where the name comes from

No source consulted gives a documented naming account for Green Township beyond the name itself; the 1881 county history describes the township's soil as exceptionally rich and fertile, among the best farmland in Ohio, but does not state that this is the source of the name.

Before the town

The 1881 county history records that Green Township was a favorite hunting ground of Native people before white settlement: arrowheads, hatchets, skinning knives and flint chips were found in abundance on the northwest quarter of Section 25, apparently a toolmaking site, and stone piles there were locally believed to be altars. A chief called by whites 'Beaver Hat' (Indian name recorded as Paupellnan), whose settlement 'Apple Chanquecake' (apple orchard) was near present Wooster, is described as hunting the township; a band of about 40 people led by a chief named Wam-pe-tek camped near Turkey Foot Lake and was, by local tradition, wiped out when its chief was killed by settler Liberton Dixon in a dispute over a bee tree. Families camped near Turkey Foot Lake and the Reservoir as late as 1809, and remains of what were said to be old Native forts and wigwams were reported as late as 1855 at the head-waters of the Nimishilla on Sections 25-36. The 1795 Treaty of Greenville opened the area to white settlement.

Nations recorded here: Lenape (Delaware).

Timeline

  1. — Green Township organizes as part of Stark County.
  2. — John Kepler, a blacksmith from Bucks County, Pennsylvania, arrives in the fall and makes the first permanent Government-land purchase in the township (320 acres with his brother Andrew); earlier squatter families, including the Triplets, Cruzens and Dixons, had lived temporarily on Section 16 school land.
  3. — Andrew Kepler, who had brought his brother John's household out with a four-horse team, returns to Pennsylvania for his own family and reaches Green Township in the spring; the brothers, who married twin sisters, share 320 acres, the east half of Section 17.
  4. — The township's first recorded marriage, Abraham Bair to Elizabeth Harter, is performed March 31 by Abraham DeHaven; local tradition holds it was actually the earlier unrecorded marriage of Jacob Smith Jr. to Betsy Dixon that came first.
  5. — Abraham Wilhelm settles in the township, and his son-in-law Cornelius Johnston enters 320 acres on which Greensburg is later laid out; Johnston's son William, born August 3, 1815, is the third white child born in the township.
  6. — Robert Lawson, an Irishman, teaches in a building George Dull had built as a weaver's shop at the future Greensburg, one of the township's earliest schools; before him William Triplet had taught briefly in a shanty on Section 16 school land.
  7. — Mr. Crum teaches a German school in a log building east of East Liberty, put up for the purpose about two years before.
  8. — David Baer surveys the village of Greensburg, the township's oldest, on land belonging to Abraham Wilhelm.
  9. — East Liberty is laid out on land belonging to John Castetter, surveyed by Henry Beard.
  10. — The new Summit County takes in Green Township from Stark; residents, who dreaded joining the Western Reserve, protest and then try to bargain their votes for Cuyahoga Falls as county seat, but Akron wins.
  11. — A brick meeting-house is built at Greensburg on land donated by Mr. Switzer, serving the Methodist Episcopal congregation until it is torn down in the spring of 1881.
  12. — Greensburg Seminary is founded under Principal J. W. Raubalt, drawing township children to a higher education than common schools offered; it later passed through the Evangelical Association's and then the Disciples' Church's management.
  13. — Myersville is laid out and grows around a new saw-mill, store and Valley Railroad construction train, which first crosses the Uniontown public road there on August 4, 1879.
  14. — The first Valley Railroad construction train crosses the Uniontown public road at the new village of Myersville.
  15. — The township holds five distinct hamlet settlements, the largest being Greensburg, amid farmland and coal deposits.
  16. — Farmers begin selling township land to residential developers, starting Green's shift from agriculture.
  17. — Residents vote to merge the village of Green with the surrounding township, incorporating as the Village of Green.
  18. — Green becomes a city, with John Torok as its first mayor.
  19. — Green settles its legal fight against the NEXUS Pipeline for $7.5 million, after which construction proceeds.

Stories

From five hamlets to one city

For most of its history Green was not a single place at all but a Stark-County-born township of farms and small crossroads hamlets, five of them by 1900, the largest being Greensburg, living off crops and local coal. That pattern held for decades after the township joined the new Summit County in 1840, until postwar suburban growth caught up with it: starting around 1950, farmers began selling their land to residential developers, and by 1991 the scattered hamlets and the surrounding township voted to become one incorporated Village of Green. The village became a city within a year, in 1992, under its first mayor, John Torok, completing a transformation from farm township to Summit County suburb in barely two generations.

A missed shot and a missing chief

According to the 1881 county history, settler Liberton Dixon, remembered locally as a daring frontier hunter who had once lived among Native people for seven years, quarreled with a chief the settlers called Wam-pe-tek over a claimed bee tree. Soon afterward the chief, who led a band of about 40 camped near Turkey Foot Lake, went missing. When neighbors heard a rifle shot and asked Dixon what he had fired at, he said a deer, and that he had missed it; but Dixon was known as a marksman who never missed, and the story that took hold was that Wam-pe-tek, not a deer, was his mark, and that Dixon threw the body into a pond near East Liberty. The chief's band never returned to clear up the mystery, and Dixon's own brother John reportedly had to intervene when the band grew suspicious enough to threaten Liberton's life. The tale, passed down among Green Township's early settlers, illustrates the mix of violence and folklore that colored relations between the township's Pennsylvania-German farmers and the Native people who continued to hunt and fish there into the 1810s.

No school for the Pennsylvania Dutch

Most early settlers of Green Township were Pennsylvania Dutch, and the 1881 county history, written by Thomas P. Hopley, blames their reluctance to pay for schooling for a generation raised in ignorance. William Triplet was possibly the first teacher, in a shanty on the Section 16 school land, but his pupils' parents did not appreciate him. Nicholas Sichley and William Early followed in a log building on the same land; Mrs. Herring, a Kepler daughter, recalled that teachers charged fifty cents a month per scholar and that if too few signed up, 'no school could be held for two or three years.' Her sister said she had to plow for her father instead of studying. John Buchtel, who lived north of Akron, said he never learned to write. One Dutch mother, Adam Yarrick's, spun six dozen cuts of yarn a day for twenty-five cents to pay her children's tuition, and Abram Hunsberger taught twenty-one winters in a row; the Yarrick boys once barred him out for three days because he would not treat them to Christmas apples.

70% of these days are measurements from a gauge inside Green; the rest are estimated from the nearest gauges around it.

41,125 days of records, 1893-01-01 to 2026-10-29. Source: NOAA NCEI GHCN-Daily, 3,240 gauges in and around Ohio. A day is "gauged" when a gauge standing inside the boundary reported it, and the value is the mean of those gauges. Otherwise it is interpolated by inverse distance from every gauge reporting within 50 miles. Nothing is carried forward, back-filled or smoothed. Against NOAA nClimDiv county monthly precipitation over 136,848 complete county-months (checked 2026-10-31): correlation 0.9515, median absolute difference 0.217 in a month. Built 2026-10-31 from the Cracked Buckeye precipitation archive. Snow is the softer number — snowfall is measured by hand with a ruler, no agency publishes a gridded county snowfall series, and blowing snow defeats every observer.

Facilities are placed on the map from Ohio EPA's own map layers, EPA's Facility Registry, coordinates written in the filings, or a geocoded street address.
