Accessibility
Our commitment
Cracked Buckeye is built to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 at level AA. Every fact the map can show is also written out in plain text on the matching page, so nothing here depends on seeing or operating the map.
What we have built in
- Keyboard: every page works with a keyboard alone, with a skip-to-content link, a logical tab order, and a visible focus outline on every link, button and control. On the map, / focuses the search box, Esc clears the current selection, and the arrow keys move through the topic picker.
- Contrast: text meets at least a 4.5:1 contrast ratio against its background in both light and dark mode. Color is never the only way information is shown — every map legend carries names and counts along with its colors, and every colored bin has a label.
- Motion: if your system is set to reduce motion, the map's bottom sheet and the page's expanding sections change state without animating.
- The map's text alternatives: the map is one way to see the data, never the only way. Every number, name and legend the map displays is also written out on the matching ZIP code, place, county, water system and topic pages.
- Structure: landmarks, one heading level at a time, and tables with captions, so a screen reader can navigate a page the way it navigates a document.
