How Bath Township, Summit County began
Surveyed into lots in 1808 by Rial McArthur and R. Warden, who recorded it as 'Wheatfield' in their field-book for the promising look of its soil, the township was not legally owned until after the 1805 Treaty of Fort Industry; before 1810 it held only six to eight squatters, including Aaron Miller, Gibson Gates, Hezekiah Burdit, and Aaron and Moses Decker, living much as their Native neighbors did, in bark shanties little better than wigwams. Connecticut proprietors Ezekiel Williams and Thomas Bull of Hartford owned much of the land; on the Bull tract, Jason Hammond had first choice of lots and Jonathan Hale second, and the community was informally renamed Hammondsburgh for Hammond before Hale, who had arrived by 1810, objected so strongly that he reportedly said, 'O, call it Jerusalem, Jericho, Bath, or anything but Hammondsburgh!' Bath was the name that stuck when the township fully organized and separated from Richfield Township in 1818, and it moved from Wayne County's original jurisdiction into Summit County when the latter was created in 1840. Hale's own 1825 homestead, expanded by the Western Reserve Historical Society into the Hale Farm and Village living-history museum after it opened to the public in 1958, sits within Cuyahoga Valley National Park and remains the township's best-known historic site.

Where the name comes from
First surveyed and recorded as Wheatfield in 1808 by surveyors Rial McArthur and R. Warden, for the promising look of the soil for raising wheat; within two or three years the community was instead calling itself Hammondsburgh, for early proprietor Jason Hammond, who had first choice of lots on the Bull tract. Settler Jonathan Hale, who had second choice of lots on the same tract, objected to the Hammondsburgh name so strongly ('O, call it Jerusalem, Jericho, Bath, or anything but Hammondsburgh!') that Bath was adopted instead when the township organized in 1818.
Before the town
No Native American village, mound, or treaty site specific to Bath Township is documented in the sources consulted. The 1881 county history notes the township was not legally opened to white ownership until after the 1805 Treaty of Fort Industry, and that its earliest squatters lived in bark shanties 'little better than deer-skin wigwams,' copying Native building customs out of necessity. The township lies within the Connecticut Western Reserve, land opened to settlement by the 1785 Treaty of Fort McIntosh and confirmed by the 1795 Treaty of Greenville.

Stories
Anything but Hammondsburgh
The township that became Bath went through two names before it found the one that stuck. Surveyors first called it Wheatfield in 1808, then, as it filled with settlers, the community began calling itself Hammondsburgh, after early settler Jason Hammond, who had first choice of lots on the Bull tract. Jonathan Hale, who took the adjoining lots as second choice after migrating from Connecticut around 1810 and would go on to build one of the township's most enduring landmarks, hated the proposed name enough to say so publicly, reportedly declaring, 'O, call it Jerusalem, Jericho, Bath, or anything but Hammondsburgh!' When the township formally organized and separated from Richfield Township in 1818, Bath is the name that won out. Hale's own homestead, built in 1825, outlasted the naming fight by well over a century: in 1958 the Western Reserve Historical Society opened it to the public as Hale Farm and Village, a living-history museum that still stands inside Cuyahoga Valley National Park and remains Bath Township's best-known historic site.
Squatters before settlers
Years before Jonathan Hale or Jason Hammond ever held legal title to an acre of Bath Township, the land already had residents. The 1881 county history records that when the first landowning settlers arrived around 1810, they found six to eight squatters already scattered through the township, men like Aaron Miller, Gibson Gates, Hezekiah Burdit, and Aaron and Moses Decker, none of whom had any legal claim to the soil under the Connecticut proprietors who owned it on paper. These squatters lived by hunting and trapping, kept only small gardens, and built shanties of bark that the historian says were 'little better than deer-skin wigwams,' a way of life borrowed as much from Native neighbors as from the New England towns the Reserve's actual proprietors had come from. None of their names survived into the township's later story the way Hale's or Hammond's did, but they were there first, a reminder that legal ownership and first settlement were not always the same thing on the Western Reserve frontier.
