How Hudson began
David Hudson led a party of Connecticut settlers to found Hudson in 1799 as part of the Connecticut Western Reserve, giving the town its founder's own name and, in time, a distinctly New England character of green squares and clapboard buildings that survives today. Hudson and others founded Western Reserve College in 1826, nicknamed the 'Yale of the West,' which relocated to Cleveland in 1882 and eventually merged into Case Western Reserve University; the town incorporated as a village in 1837. Abolitionist John Brown grew up and was educated in Hudson from 1805 to 1825 and made his first public vow to destroy slavery at a Hudson prayer meeting in November 1837, and President-elect Abraham Lincoln addressed a crowd of about 6,000 from a train car there in 1861.

Before the town
No Native American village, mound, or treaty site specific to Hudson is documented in the sources consulted. Hudson lies within the Connecticut Western Reserve, land opened to settlement by the 1785 Treaty of Fort McIntosh and confirmed by the 1795 Treaty of Greenville; surveyors under Moses Cleaveland who laid out the Reserve's townships beginning in 1796, including Hudson's, passed through this same treaty-opened territory.

Stories
A prayer meeting vow
John Brown was not born in Hudson, but he grew up there, educated in the town from 1805 to 1825 in a community his own founder, David Hudson, had built as a transplanted piece of Connecticut only a few years earlier. Brown returned to that community's moral seriousness in November 1837, when, at a prayer meeting held in Hudson in response to the murder of abolitionist editor Elijah Lovejoy in Illinois, he stood and made his first public vow to devote his life to destroying slavery. The vow came decades before Harpers Ferry, in the same New England-flavored town square where Hudson and his fellow Connecticut settlers had founded Western Reserve College in 1826 to educate the Western Reserve's children in the same tradition. Hudson's Main Street and green still carry that New England imprint today, a rare intact record of how the Connecticut Western Reserve's settlers built their towns to look like the ones they had left behind.
