How we find events
What is watched, what is checked, and what is never scraped.
What we watch. The public calendars of Ohio's cities, villages, townships and counties, its public libraries, park districts, school districts, county fairs, visitors bureaus, chambers of commerce, museums and universities: 1,109 calendars read on October 19. Each is read once a day as a structured feed (iCalendar, RSS or the calendar platform's own listing), never as a screenshot or a copy of its page.
The daily search. A second, scheduled job searches the web every day for new postings and for calendars we do not watch yet, in a rotating slice of places. It writes leads only. Nothing it finds is shown until the first job has fetched the posting itself and found the event's title and date on that page.
What is checked. The window runs from yesterday to 90 days out. Past events drop off. An event its calendar marks cancelled is shown as cancelled until its date. A posting that disappears from its calendar disappears here on the next day's run. Every event links to the posting it came from and names the calendar; no event is written, inferred or re-described by us, and summaries are the source's own words, cut at 280 characters.
What is never scraped. Facebook, Instagram, Nextdoor, X, TikTok, anything behind a login, and any site whose robots.txt or terms say no. No event photos are copied. Store sales, worship services and a venue's ordinary business hours are not events here.
Where to look, on every page. Each place, ZIP and county events page ends with the calendars watched for it and the date each was last read.
Know a calendar we should watch?
Send the link to a public calendar or to one event's posting. We check new links every day and add a calendar once it has a feed we can read.
Thank you. We will look at the link within a few days and add the calendar if we can read it; a single event appears once the posting itself confirms the title and date.
We could not take that link. A link starts with http:// or https://, and an event needs its title and date as the posting shows them.
That is five links today from this connection; please send the rest tomorrow.
We cannot read that site; a link to the group's own page or calendar works.
