How Akron began
Akron was founded in 1825 by Simon Perkins and Paul Williams at the summit level of the newly chartered Ohio and Erie Canal, taking its name from the Greek akron, meaning summit or high point; the first settler in the area, Major Miner Spicer, had arrived in 1810. The village grew from a merger of South Akron and North Akron (Cascade) in 1836 and became a city in 1865, but its defining transformation began in 1870 when B.F. Goodrich moved his rubber works there, followed by Goodyear (1898) and Firestone (1900), making Akron the 'Rubber Capital of the World' and, in the 1910s, the fastest-growing city in the United States. Today Akron is Summit County's seat and Ohio's fifth-largest city, home to the University of Akron, Stan Hywet Hall, and the Goodyear Airdock.

Where the name comes from
Akron takes its name from the Greek word akron, meaning 'summit' or 'high point,' because the town was platted at the highest elevation, the summit level, of the Ohio and Erie Canal.
Before the town
Akron sits directly on the Portage Path, the 8-mile Native trail crossing the watershed divide between the Cuyahoga and Tuscarawas rivers; the path was used by Shawnee, Lenape (Delaware), Mingo, Wyandot, Ottawa, and Miami travelers and was written into the 1785 Treaty of Fort McIntosh and 1795 Treaty of Greenville as part of the boundary between land ceded to the United States and Native country. Surveyor Moses Warren mapped the path's exact route on July 18, 1797, recording a Native village, Old Cuyahoga Town, along the Cuyahoga River; use of the trail ended in 1827 when the Ohio and Erie Canal, built largely along its route, opened.

Stories
An estate named for a stone quarry
F.A. Seiberling, who had co-founded Goodyear Tire and Rubber in 1898, began building a 70-acre country estate on Akron's west side in 1912, hiring architect Charles Schneider, landscape designer Warren Manning, and interior decorator Hugo Huber. He and his wife, Gertrude Ferguson Penfield Seiberling, named the finished manor Stan Hywet, an Old English phrase loosely meaning 'stone hewn' or 'stone quarry,' a nod to the property's earlier use as a sandstone quarry. The family moved in during December 1915, and the estate remained the Seiberling home until F.A.'s death in 1955, after which it became a nonprofit historic house museum. Stan Hywet is one of the largest homes in the United States, and it stands today as the clearest physical record of the wealth Akron's rubber boom created for the men who built it.
The Rubber Capital's giant blimp hangar
By the late 1920s Goodyear was building rigid airships for the US Navy and needed a hangar large enough to hold them. Built between April and November 1929 for $2.2 million, the Goodyear Airdock rose 1,175 feet long, 325 feet wide, and 211 feet high, with 364,000 square feet of unobstructed floor space and a volume greater than eight football fields stacked together, making it the world's largest building without interior supports when it was completed. The Airdock launched two of the Navy's largest airships, the USS Akron in 1931 and the USS Macon, and stayed in continuous use for airship work through World War II, with the last Navy airship built there completed in 1960. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1973 and named a Historic Civil Engineering Landmark in 1980, the Airdock still stands over Akron as a monument to the aviation ambitions the rubber industry's wealth made possible.
