How Mahoning County began
Mahoning County was created by the Ohio General Assembly on March 1, 1846, joining ten townships from Trumbull County that had been part of the Connecticut Western Reserve with five townships taken from Columbiana County that had never belonged to the Reserve at all -- a division that still shapes the county's settlement history, Yankee farm towns to the north and east, Pennsylvania-German and Quaker communities to the south. Because the future county lay entirely east of the boundary the 1795 Treaty of Greenville drew through Ohio, settlement could begin almost immediately: John Young surveyed and purchased the township that became Youngstown in 1796-1797, and Turhand Kirtland surveyed Poland Township, the very first parcel surveyed anywhere in the Western Reserve, the following year. Canfield served as the original county seat from 1846 until the 1870s, when the legislature moved the seat to the far larger, iron-and-steel-driven city of Youngstown. The county's industrial identity, built on furnaces dating to the 1840s and consolidated under giants like Youngstown Sheet and Tube after 1900, collapsed abruptly on "Black Monday," September 19, 1977, when mass mill closures began a regional decline from which the Mahoning Valley has never fully recovered. Mill Creek Park, founded by attorney Volney Rogers in 1891 as Ohio's first park district, remains the county's best-known green space and a rare bright thread through that industrial story.
