Life story
Viktor Schreckengost was born June 26, 1906, in Sebring, a pottery town, one of six children. His father worked in a ceramics factory, and two of his brothers, Donald and Paul, also became ceramicists.
He graduated from the Cleveland School of the Arts, now the Cleveland Institute of Art, in 1929, and studied in Vienna. He then taught industrial design in Cleveland for more than fifty years and founded the first industrial design program in the nation.
His works include the Jazz Bowl of 1930, made for Eleanor Roosevelt as a gift to Franklin Roosevelt, a Mercury bicycle shown at the 1939 World's Fair, the first cab-over-engine truck design, modern dinnerware, and the ceramic sculpture Apocalypse '42, protesting fascism. He served in the Navy in World War II and helped improve radar technology.
President George W. Bush gave him the National Medal of Arts in 2006. He died January 26, 2008, at 101 and is buried in Lake View Cemetery in Cleveland.
