How Beaver Township, Mahoning County began

Beaver Township was established in 1811 as part of Columbiana County and, like four neighboring townships, was added to Mahoning County only when the county organized in 1846 -- it was never part of the Connecticut Western Reserve. Its largest present-day community, North Lima, was laid out around 1826 with a name likely transferred from Lima, New York, and has held a post office since 1832 by Wikipedia's date (the county histories give about 1828, then 1834); the smaller community of Woodworth began as a settlement called Steamtown, with a post office under that name from 1857 to 1860 before it took the Woodworth name in 1874, according to Wikipedia. Part of the city of Columbiana also extends into the township's southern edge. Beaver Township's economy stayed agricultural well into the twentieth century, documented in a 1952 photograph of a North Lima truck farm taken for a Mennonite community survey, and it remains a rural and low-density residential township today.

Settled 1802 (Major Jacob Gilbert, among the first settlers); township organized 1811, platted North Lima founded about 1826 by James Simpson; East Lewistown lots laid out about 1830; the township itself was not platted but surveyed as township 3, range 2, incorporated Added to Mahoning County upon its organization in 1846, by Major Jacob Gilbert and Christopher Mentzer among the first settlers; James Simpson founded North Lima.

Where the name comes from

Ohio has two other Beaver Townships, in Noble and Pike counties. The township's largest community, North Lima, was laid out around 1826 and its name may be a transfer from Lima, New York, brought by settlers from that area; a post office called North Lima has operated since 1832, by Wikipedia's date (the county histories give about 1828, then 1834). The smaller community of Woodworth was originally called Steamtown, with a post office under that name from 1857 to 1860, before adopting the Woodworth name with its own post office from 1874 to 1905, according to Wikipedia.

Before the town

No Native American village, trail, or site specific to Beaver Township is documented in the sources consulted. Like Springfield, Goshen, Green and Smith townships, Beaver was never part of the Connecticut Western Reserve; it belonged to Columbiana County until 1846.

Timeline

  1. — Major Jacob Gilbert, a Marylander and later a War of 1812 officer, settles on the farm later held by Michael Wieland; Christopher Mentzer settles on section 13 in 1803 and Christian Clinker near North Lima soon after.
  2. — John Coblentz of Frederick, Maryland, settles on section 25, and Frederick and Michael Dutterer are near North Lima; the first mill is put up on Mill Creek in section 15 about 1805 by Matthias Glass.
  3. — Beaver Township is organized at an election held April 1 (judges Christian Clinker, Frederick Sponseller and Peter Eib), choosing John Crumbacher, Christian Clinker and Frederick Sponseller trustees; its first tax assessment in 1812 is $35.25.
  4. — North Lima is laid out.
  5. — John Glass opens the first public house in North Lima, and the freeholders of eight school districts are listed in the township; East Lewistown is laid out about this year.
  6. — A post office called North Lima is recorded as operating from this year (Wikipedia); the 1882 and 1907 county histories instead date the first one about 1828 with Jacob Gilbert as postmaster, discontinued in 1831 and re-established in 1834.
  7. — Jesse Motter opens a store in East Lewistown, where building had begun in 1836, and trades there until 1845.
  8. — Beaver Township is added to the newly organized Mahoning County, having previously been part of Columbiana County for about 35 years.
  9. — Dr. Nathan Hahn becomes North Lima's first permanent physician and serves until his death in 1874; the township passes to the new Mahoning County the same year.
  10. — Anthony Smith builds a three-story, three-run steam flouring-mill on Mill Creek, which Hasness, Thoman and Company own from 1877.
  11. — A post office called Steamtown opens to serve the settlement that becomes Woodworth; it operates until 1860 (according to Wikipedia).
  12. — A brick schoolhouse, 32 by 40 feet, is built in North Lima's west district for $2,500; an east-district house follows in 1871 for $2,700, and the old Evangelical church is turned into a village hall in 1876.
  13. — A post office called Woodworth opens, formalizing the community's new name; it operates until 1905 (according to Wikipedia).
  14. — North Lima has about 300 inhabitants, three churches, two school-houses and a steam grist-mill, and owes its existence, the 1882 history says, to demand for a local trading point.
  15. — On August 11, a Mennonite Community Photograph Collection survey documents Walter Shank's truck-farming residence in North Lima.
  16. — The township's population is 6,756 at the census.

Stories

From Steamtown to Woodworth

The small Beaver Township community now called Woodworth began under a very different name: Steamtown, which held its own post office from 1857 to 1860, according to Wikipedia. By 1874 the community had been renamed Woodworth and opened a post office under that name, which it kept until 1905.

The mail that went on foot

North Lima's first post office was set up about 1828 with Major Jacob Gilbert, the township's earliest settler, as postmaster, and a man named Stillson carried the mail on foot to Liverpool. The route was so hard to keep up that the office was discontinued about 1831, so North Lima had no post office of its own until 1834. It was re-established in 1834, after which a succession of storekeepers held it: J. G. Leslie, Samuel Rohrbaugh, J. G. Buzard, John H. Donald, Samuel Rau, George Buzard and Henry Buzard. Wikipedia dates the North Lima post office from 1832, a year the county histories do not mention, so the dates are given as the sources give them.
