How Canfield Township, Mahoning County began

Canfield Township was purchased from the Connecticut Land Company in 1798 as Township Number 1, Range 3, bought by six men but held in the majority by land agent Judson Canfield, for whom it was renamed in 1800. Settled first by families from Connecticut and joined from about 1805 by German immigrants and, later, Irish immigrants, the township's central village had about seventeen homes, a store and a school by 1805 and grew into the area's trading hub. When Mahoning County organized in 1846, Canfield became its county seat, a status confirmed by incorporation in 1849, but three decades of rivalry with the larger city of Youngstown ended when the Ohio Legislature moved the seat there in the 1870s. Stripped of the courthouse, Canfield settled into life as a farming community and, from 1846 onward, home to the Mahoning County Agricultural Society's fair, which grew into the largest county fair in Ohio.

Where the name comes from

The township and city are named for Judson Canfield, a Connecticut Land Company land agent who held the majority interest in the six-proprietor purchase of Township Number 1, Range 3 in 1798; the settlement adopted his name in 1800.

Before the town

No Native American village, trail, or site specific to Canfield Township is documented in the sources consulted. The township lies within the Connecticut Western Reserve, land ceded by the Wyandot, Ottawa, Chippewa, Munsee, Delaware, Shawnee, and Potawatomi in the 1805 Treaty of Fort Industry.

Stories

The county seat that lost its county

For nearly thirty years, Canfield -- not Youngstown -- was the seat of Mahoning County government. When the county organized in 1846, Canfield's central location among its farming townships made it the natural choice, and the village built a Classical Revival courthouse, completed in 1848 and enlarged with an Italianate west wing in 1862, to house it. But Youngstown was growing far faster on iron and, later, steel, and its leaders pressed for years to have the county seat moved to match the county's real center of population and commerce. The Ohio State Legislature finally settled the fight in the 1870s, voting to move the seat to Youngstown and leaving Canfield's courthouse without a government to house. The building went on to serve as a school and various commercial enterprises before restoration in the 1960s returned it to prominence as one of the township's principal historic landmarks -- a courthouse that outlived the county seat it was built for.

Ohio's largest county fair

In the same year, 1846, that the Ohio Legislature carved Mahoning County out of Trumbull, the newly formed Mahoning County Agricultural Society decided the young farming county needed a fair to promote agriculture, an idea Elisha Whittlesey helped advance through the local Congregational Church. That fair, held in Canfield and known today as the Canfield Fair, grew over more than a century and a half into the largest county fair in the state of Ohio and the second-largest fair overall behind only the Ohio State Fair, drawing roughly 350,000 visitors across its week-long summer run on 353 acres of fairgrounds. It has gone dark only rarely -- during the First and Second World Wars and, apart from a junior fair, in 2020 -- and even hosted a NASCAR Grand National race at the adjoining Canfield Speedway in 1950. What began as a wartime-era agricultural society's answer to a new county's need for a shared gathering place is now one of Mahoning County's largest annual events.
