How Sebring began
Sebring is a company town built on farmland in Mahoning County by the Sebring family of East Liverpool, pottery makers who had bought a small East Liverpool works in 1887. In the spring of 1898 the family assembled farmland as the Sebring Land Company and laid the town out on a grid, with numbered streets running north-south and state-named streets east-west; the 1907 county history gives July 1899 for the platting by four brothers on 2,000 acres. Four potteries were built between 1899 and 1903, the village incorporated in 1899, and about 1,200 potters worked in Sebring by 1907. Its place in pottery manufacturing is second only to East Liverpool's. Sebring had 5,078 residents in 1980, its highest count, and 4,191 in 2020.
Settled 1898 (Sebring family assembles the townsite and begins construction), platted spring 1898 (Sebring family, laid out in a regular grid); July 1899 per the 1907 county history, incorporated 1899, by The Sebring family of East Liverpool, Ohio: eight siblings including Oliver H., George E., Ellsworth, Frank A., Fred E. and William, with sisters Eva and Emma (Frank Sebring House page); the 1907 county history names four brothers, George E., Oliver H., Ellsworth H. and Frank A..
Where the name comes from
The village is named directly for the Sebring family of East Liverpool, Ohio, pottery manufacturers who purchased and enlarged a small East Liverpool pottery works in 1887 and, in 1898, built an entirely new company town in Mahoning County to house their expanding operations.
Before the town
No Native American village, trail, or site specific to Sebring is recorded; the village did not exist before 1898. The land lay within the cessions of the Treaty of Fort McIntosh (1785) and the Treaty of Greenville (1795).

Stories
A town built to order
In the spring of 1898 the Sebring siblings of East Liverpool assembled farmland in northwestern Mahoning County under the name Sebring Land Company. The town was laid out on a grid, with numbered streets running north-south and streets named for states running east-west. Four potteries followed: the Oliver China Company (1899), the Sebring Pottery (1900), the French China Company (1901) and the Limoges China Company (1903). The family had begun in pottery by buying a small works in East Liverpool in 1887. By 1907 about 1,200 potters worked in Sebring, and the town's place in pottery manufacturing is second only to East Liverpool's.
A schoolroom in a remodeled barn
Sebring was a stretch of farmland when the Sebring brothers began building their pottery town, and its first public school had to be improvised. The 1907 county history says the village's schools began in 1900, and that the rapid growth of a town on farmland made it necessary to seize a remodeled barn for a school room until a proper building could be put up. Elsie Roberts and Alice J. Begue taught in the crowded room and share the honor of being Sebring's first teachers. A four-room brick building was ready by September 1901, when Superintendent S. V. Cox and three teachers took charge. The pupils were from many backgrounds, and the history says organizing them fell heavily on the teachers. By the end of 1902 the schools were again over capacity and had to use the first building and then the city hall; a two-room building was added in 1904, and by 1907 enrollment was about 300 with a three-year high school.

Snow is the softer number — snowfall is measured by hand with a ruler, no agency publishes a gridded county snowfall series, and blowing snow defeats every observer.
