How Beloit began

Beloit, in southwestern Mahoning County's Smith Township, began in the late 1840s as Smithfield Station when a railroad was built through the area. Because another Ohio post office already used the name Smithfield, causing mail-delivery confusion, the community's postmaster held a contest to choose a new name about 1863; the winning entry came from a resident with family ties to Beloit, Wisconsin, and the town has carried that transplanted name ever since. The railroad -- still running through the village center -- drove Beloit's early economic growth, and the village supported a flour mill that shipped its "red rose flour" nationally and a Friends church, founded in 1889, that eventually sent out seven missionaries. Beloit resident William Saunders is credited locally with building an early steam-powered automobile around 1891. A major fire in the late nineteenth century destroyed the village's stockyards, general stores and hotels. The county histories of 1879 and 1882 call it a hamlet 'never regularly laid out or incorporated as a village' with about 150 people; it had a mayor by 1907, and the Census Bureau counted 903 residents in 2020.

Settled Late 1840s, with railroad construction, platted Never regularly platted as a village according to the county histories of 1879 and 1882 (it grew up around the Smithfield Station depot), incorporated Between 1889 and 1907 (a mayor of Beloit is named in the 1907 county history; exact date not found); the post office was renamed Beloit about 1863, by Not individually named in the sources consulted; renamed via a postmaster-organized community naming contest.

Where the name comes from

The village was originally called Smithfield Station, but postal officials found it caused confusion with another Ohio community already named Smithfield. The postmaster held a contest to choose a replacement name; the winning entry was submitted by a resident with a relative from Beloit, Wisconsin, and the borrowed name has been used ever since. The county histories of 1879 and 1882 date the change to about 1863.

Before the town

No Native American village, trail, or site specific to Beloit is documented in the sources consulted; the village did not exist before the railroad era of the 1840s. Smith Township, in which it sits, was never part of the Connecticut Western Reserve, having belonged to Columbiana County until 1846.

Timeline

  1. — A major fire destroys the village's stockyards, general stores and hotels.
  2. — William Smith, for whom Smith Township is named, brings his family to section 3 after James Carter, who had cleared land there by mistake in 1803, sells him the improvements; the 1879 county history counts Smith the first permanent settler.
  3. — James C. Stanley of Hanover County, Virginia, settles on section 24 with a wife and eight children, probably the township's second settler.
  4. — Smith Township is organized in March at a meeting of the Columbiana County commissioners on the petition of Judge William Smith, and named for him.
  5. — The Friends build their meeting-house on section 34, the first church in Smith Township; the 1907 history says the church 'is now located at Beloit'.
  6. — A railroad is built through the area, and the settlement of Smithfield Station grows up around the stop.
  7. — The Pittsburgh, Fort Wayne and Chicago Railroad is built through the township in 1848-49, and a depot and post office called Smithfield Station are established on it, the beginning of Beloit.
  8. — A union church building is erected at Beloit; the Presbyterians buy it in 1870 and set up a branch there that is later merged into the Presbyterian church of Sebring.
  9. — Facing postal confusion with another Ohio Smithfield, the community's postmaster holds a naming contest; the winning entry, tied to a family connection in Beloit, Wisconsin, gives the village its new name.
  10. — Dr. J. W. Webb practices in Beloit for two years; Dr. J. Cock begins practice there in 1874.
  11. — The county history describes Beloit as a hamlet, never regularly laid out or incorporated, with a church, saw-mill, two stores, a wagon factory, a blacksmith shop and about 150 people.
  12. — The Beloit Friends Church is established; it later sends out seven missionaries.
  13. — Beloit resident William Saunders builds an early steam-powered automobile, according to local history.
  14. — The four Sebring brothers buy 2,000 acres in Smith Township just over the Columbiana County line and plat the pottery city of Sebring, whose plants employ about 1,200 workmen by 1907.
  15. — A new flouring mill is built in Beloit by H. G. Stanley and Sons, and the village has a four-room graded school; the 1907 history also names a past mayor of Beloit.
  16. — The census counts 510 residents in Beloit (162 in 1880); it counts 903 in 2020.

Stories

A town renamed to fix the mail

Beloit's original name, Smithfield Station, was a straightforward railroad-stop label -- and a problem, because another Ohio post office already answered to Smithfield, leading to regular mail mix-ups between the two communities. Rather than let the confusion continue, the local postmaster organized a contest in 1863 inviting residents to suggest a replacement name. The winning submission came from someone with a relative living in Beloit, Wisconsin, a town whose own name derives from a blend of the French 'beau' (beautiful) and the English 'oit,' though nothing in the local record suggests Ohio's Beloit residents knew or cared about that etymology -- they simply wanted a name the Post Office Department could tell apart from Smithfield. The borrowed Wisconsin name stuck, and more than a century and a half later the Mahoning County village still carries it, a small monument to how mundane a town-renaming can be even when the result outlives everyone involved in the decision.

The meeting-house that followed the railroad

The first church built anywhere in Smith Township was the Friends' meeting-house on section 34, put up in 1829 when the township, organized only in 1821, had about two dozen voters. When the Pittsburgh, Fort Wayne and Chicago Railroad was built through in 1848-49, a depot and post office called Smithfield Station grew beside the track, and by 1859 the neighborhood had a union church of its own. The 1907 county history notes that the Friends' church 'is now located at Beloit'. A 2013 Akron Legal News feature dates the present Beloit Friends Church to 1889 and says it sent seven missionaries into the field. The county histories do not give the year of the move, so the two dates are kept separate here rather than joined into one story.
