The history under the water: the valley before, the dam, the stories. All Ohio lakes
How Milton Township, Mahoning County began
Milton Township in Mahoning County's northwestern corner was reshaped in the twentieth century by an industrial water project: in 1910 the City of Youngstown purchased 3,416 acres along the Mahoning River in the township to build a reservoir that would supply cooling water to the city's iron and steel mills. A catastrophic Easter Sunday 1913 flood, which raised the Mahoning River 22 feet in four days, hastened construction of a 2,800-foot dam, completed in 1917 and creating the 1,640-acre Lake Milton. Resort communities, Lake Milton itself and neighboring Craig Beach, grew up around the reservoir's shoreline through the twentieth century. When the aging dam needed $5 million in repairs Youngstown would not fund, area residents petitioned the state legislature in the 1980s, and Youngstown transferred the reservoir to Ohio's park system, which opened Lake Milton State Park, the state's 72nd, in 1988. The township's oldest documented structure, the Daniel Vaughn Homestead, stands on the lake's western shore.
Settled Township organized in the early Western Reserve settlement era; Lake Milton community formally named with a 1942 post office, platted The reservoir and surrounding shoreline communities date from Youngstown's 1910 land purchase and 1913-1917 dam construction, incorporated Lake Milton remains a census-designated place; Craig Beach, within the township, separately incorporated as a village (covered in its own unit), by City of Youngstown (reservoir and dam); Daniel Vaughn (homestead).
Where the name comes from
Milton Township gives its name to Lake Milton, the reservoir the City of Youngstown built within it beginning in 1910; the township's own name origin is not recorded (Ohio has four other Milton townships).
Before the town
No Native village or earthwork specific to Milton Township is documented; the 1907 county history, which names the early settlers and their mills, does not record one.
Timeline
- — Settlement begins near Pricetown; Nathaniel Stanley, probably the first, soon moves on to Newton, and Asa Porter and John Vanetten settle west of the Mahoning.
- — Jesse Holliday builds a gristmill, sawmill and carding mill; he sells them twelve years later to John Price.
- — A Presbyterian church is organized about this year by citizens of Newton and Milton and built near Price's Mills in Newton; a new church is built at Orr's Corners in 1847.
- — John Johnston and Bildad Hine are elected justices of the peace for the joint townships of Newton and Milton; Milton becomes a township and voting precinct by itself a year or two later.
- — Robert Price, for whom Priceville was named, arrives.
- — J. M. Calender buys the flouring mill that Dr. Jonathan I. Tod had built in the late 1830s, and later adds a flax mill and woolen factory.
- — The City of Youngstown purchases 3,416 acres along the Mahoning River in Milton Township, intending to build a reservoir to supply cooling water to its iron and steel mills.
- — A catastrophic Easter Sunday flood raises the Mahoning River 22 feet above normal over four days, causing heavy damage and accelerating plans for the dam; dam construction begins later that year.
- — The 2,800-foot dam is completed, creating the 1,640-acre Lake Milton.
- — A post office opens under the name Lake Milton, formally establishing the shoreline community.
- — The Daniel Vaughn Homestead, on the lake's western side, is added to the National Register of Historic Places on July 18.
- — When Youngstown refuses to fund $5 million in needed dam repairs, local residents petition the Ohio Legislature; Youngstown transfers the reservoir to the state, and Ohio opens Lake Milton State Park, its 72nd state park, in fall 1988.
- — The census counts 3,565 people in the township.
Stories
A lake built to cool steel mills
Lake Milton exists because Youngstown's steel mills needed water. In 1910 the city bought 3,416 acres of farmland along the Mahoning River in Milton Township, planning a reservoir to supply cooling water to its iron and steel operations more than a dozen miles downstream. Before construction got underway, an Easter Sunday flood in 1913 sent the Mahoning River 22 feet above its normal level over four days, a disaster that made the case for the reservoir project more urgent and pushed dam construction forward that same year. The finished dam, 2,800 feet long and completed in 1917, backed up 1,640 acres of water -- an industrial water-supply project that, almost as a side effect, created one of Mahoning County's most popular recreational lakes, with resort communities growing up around its shoreline through the twentieth century. When the dam aged into needing $5 million in repairs in the 1980s and Youngstown, its industrial reason for existing much diminished by then, refused to pay, it was local shoreline residents who fought to save the lake, petitioning the state legislature until Youngstown handed the reservoir over to Ohio's park system. Lake Milton State Park opened in 1988, the state's 72nd, a recreational afterlife for a lake first built to cool steel.
