How Canfield began

Canfield was settled in 1798 as the central village of Township Number 1, Range 3, purchased from the Connecticut Land Company and named in 1800 for majority proprietor Judson Canfield. By 1805 it had grown to about seventeen homes, a store and a school, and when Mahoning County organized in 1846 Canfield became its county seat, incorporating in 1849 and building a Classical Revival courthouse (1848, enlarged 1862) on the town square. Rivalry with the far larger Youngstown ended in the 1870s when the Ohio Legislature moved the county seat there, and Canfield settled instead into a role it has kept ever since: home, from 1846 onward, to the Mahoning County Agricultural Society's fair, which grew into the largest county fair in Ohio. Well-preserved Classical Revival and Greek Revival houses from its early-nineteenth-century heyday, several individually listed on the National Register of Historic Places, still line its historic square.

Settled 1798, chiefly by families from Connecticut, platted 1798, as the village center of Township Number 1, Range 3, incorporated Named Canfield in 1800; incorporated 1849 as Mahoning County's original county seat, by Judson Canfield, Connecticut Land Company land agent and majority proprietor of the township purchase.

Where the name comes from

Canfield is named for Judson Canfield, a Connecticut Land Company land agent who held the majority interest among six proprietors who purchased Township Number 1, Range 3 from the company in 1798; the settlement took his name in 1800.

Before the town

No Native American village, trail, or site specific to Canfield is documented in the sources consulted. The settlement lies within the Connecticut Western Reserve, land ceded by the Wyandot, Ottawa, Chippewa, Munsee, Delaware, Shawnee, and Potawatomi in the 1805 Treaty of Fort Industry.

Stories

A courthouse square without a courthouse to run

Canfield was Mahoning County's first seat of government, chosen when the county organized in 1846 for its central position among the surrounding farm townships. The town built a Classical Revival courthouse on its square in 1848 and enlarged it with an Italianate wing in 1862, but the arrangement could not last: Youngstown's iron and steel economy was growing far faster than Canfield's farm trade, and after years of rivalry the Ohio Legislature voted in 1874 to move the county seat there instead. Rather than fall into decline, Canfield's old courthouse found new uses as a school and a home to various businesses, and restoration work in the 1960s returned the building to prominence. Canfield's town square today, ringed by the well-preserved houses of the lawyers, judges and merchants who once worked around that courthouse -- among them the 1846 Charles Ruggles House at 17 Court Street -- still reads as a county seat, even though the county government left a century and a half ago.

Ohio's largest county fair

The same year Mahoning County organized, 1846, its new Agricultural Society decided to hold a fair, with Elisha Whittlesey helping promote the idea through Canfield's Congregational Church. The Canfield Fair has run in the town ever since, apart from wartime cancellations during the First and Second World Wars and, apart from a scaled-down junior fair, in 2020, and has grown into the largest county fair in Ohio and the state's second-largest fair overall behind only the Ohio State Fair, drawing roughly 350,000 visitors to its 353-acre fairgrounds each summer. The adjoining Canfield Speedway even hosted a NASCAR Grand National race in 1950, won by driver Bill Rexford. A fair founded to promote agriculture in a brand-new farming county has outlasted the county seat that once stood a few blocks away.
