How Struthers began

Struthers began in 1798 when John Struthers, from Washington County, Pennsylvania, purchased 400 acres of Poland Township along Yellow Creek and named the settlement Marbletown; nearby, the Hopewell Furnace, built in 1803, briefly made the area an iron-producing pioneer before the War of 1812 ruined the Struthers family financially and the land lay dormant. In 1865 John's son Thomas Struthers repurchased the land and renamed it Struthers to honor his father, and the town became an iron town again in 1869 with the Anna Furnace. Early-twentieth-century steel expansion, anchored by Youngstown Sheet and Tube's Campbell Works straddling Struthers and neighboring Campbell, brought waves of European immigrants and rapid growth; Struthers incorporated as a village in 1902 and became a city in 1920. Like the rest of the Mahoning Valley, Struthers boomed on steel through the mid-twentieth century and was devastated when the mills closed in 1977, and its population has fallen by more than a third since its 1960 peak.

Settled 1798 (John Struthers purchases 400 acres and names it Marbletown); renamed and resettled by his son Thomas Struthers in 1865, platted Land platted and developed as an industrial town chiefly after 1865, incorporated Village, 1902; city, 1920, by John Struthers, of Washington County, Pennsylvania (1798 founding); his son Thomas Struthers (1865 renaming and redevelopment).

Where the name comes from

The town was first called Marbletown by its founder, John Struthers, who purchased the 400-acre tract in 1798. After the War of 1812 ruined Struthers financially and the land sat dormant for decades, his son Thomas Struthers bought the property in 1865 and, to honor his father, had the town's name changed to Struthers by popular vote.

Before the town

No Native American village, trail, or site specific to Struthers is documented in the sources consulted. The area was part of Poland Township within the Connecticut Western Reserve, land ceded by the Wyandot, Ottawa, Chippewa, Munsee, Delaware, Shawnee, and Potawatomi in the 1805 Treaty of Fort Industry.

Timeline

  1. — John Struthers, of Washington County, Pennsylvania, purchases 400 acres of Poland Township land and names the settlement Marbletown.
  2. — The Hopewell Furnace, built by Daniel Eaton (recorded elsewhere as Heaton) on Yellow Creek, briefly makes the area an early Western Reserve iron center; the furnace is later referenced in the opening line of Bruce Springsteen's 1995 song "Youngstown."
  3. — John Struthers and his family suffer financial ruin during the War of 1812, and the Marbletown land lies dormant for decades afterward.
  4. — Thomas Struthers, John's son, purchases the dormant land and has the town renamed Struthers in his father's honor.
  5. — The Anna Furnace is built by the Struthers Iron Company, restarting iron production in the town; it is rebuilt in 1881 and 1895 and later owned by the Struthers Furnace Company from 1896 to 1927.
  6. — Immigrants from throughout Europe flood into Struthers as the steel industry expands rapidly in the early twentieth century.
  7. — Struthers is officially incorporated as a village.
  8. — Struthers becomes a city.
  9. — Youngstown Sheet and Tube's home plant straddling Struthers and neighboring land is renamed the Campbell Works, in honor of company president James Campbell; the adjoining community incorporates separately as the city of Campbell.
  10. — A "Greetings from Struthers, Ohio" large-letter postcard is produced by Curt Teich for the Mahoning Valley Distributing Agency, capturing the city near its steel-era population peak.
  11. — Steel plants serving Struthers close as part of the broader Mahoning Valley steel collapse, costing the city thousands of jobs.

Stories

A town renamed for a ruined father

John Struthers arrived from Washington County, Pennsylvania in 1798 and purchased 400 acres along Yellow Creek, naming his new settlement Marbletown. Its fortunes rose briefly with the Hopewell Furnace nearby in 1803, but the War of 1812 brought the Struthers family to financial ruin, and Marbletown's land sat undeveloped for more than fifty years. It took a second generation to revive it: in 1865, John's son Thomas Struthers bought back the dormant property and, wanting to honor his father rather than promote himself, had the town's name changed by popular vote from Marbletown to Struthers. Four years later the Anna Furnace went up, restarting the iron industry John Struthers had first brought to the site more than sixty years earlier -- a rare case of a Mahoning Valley town named not for its founder's own ambition but for his son's memory of him.

A furnace in a rock song

The 1803 Hopewell Furnace on Yellow Creek operated for less than a decade before the War of 1812 idled it for good, one of dozens of small charcoal iron works that dotted the early Mahoning Valley before the age of steel. It would have remained a footnote in local histories except for an unlikely afterlife: Bruce Springsteen's 1995 song "Youngstown," a ballad about the collapse of the valley's steel industry, opens its first line with a reference to the furnace's construction. A structure built to smelt iron with charcoal at the start of the nineteenth century ended up, almost two hundred years later, as the opening image in a song about the industry it helped start -- and about that industry's eventual, devastating end in the same valley.

Snow is the softer number — snowfall is measured by hand with a ruler, no agency publishes a gridded county snowfall series, and blowing snow defeats every observer.

Facilities are placed on the map from Ohio EPA's own map layers, EPA's Facility Registry, coordinates written in the filings, or a geocoded street address.
