How Springfield Township, Mahoning County began

Springfield Township, in the southeastern corner of present Mahoning County along the Pennsylvania border, was for its first decades part of Columbiana County and was only added to Mahoning County when the Ohio Legislature organized it in 1846 -- unlike most of the county's townships, it was never part of the Connecticut Western Reserve. The county histories say the township was permanently settled about 1801 by Pennsylvania Germans under Peter Musser, who founded Petersburg before 1810; the village carried his name through a post office first called Musser's Mill from 1807. New Springfield, platted in the early 1820s in the township's south, and New Middletown, its largest present-day village, grew as smaller farm-trade centers. The township remains rural and residential, its history thinner in the written record than the Western Reserve townships around it.

Settled Peter Musser about 1801 (the 1879 and 1882 histories: 'permanently settled about 1801'); Wikipedia says the 1790s, platted Petersburg platted about 1805 by Peter Musser; New Springfield platted in the early 1820s, incorporated Township added to Mahoning County in 1846, having previously been part of Columbiana County, by Peter Musser (Petersburg); German-Pennsylvania settler families generally.

Where the name comes from

The township shares its name with ten other Springfield townships in Ohio. Its oldest village, Petersburg, is named for Peter Musser, who platted it around 1805; its post office was first called Musser's Mill in 1807, changed to Petersburgh in 1819, and finally shortened to Petersburg in 1893. New Springfield, platted in the township's south in the early 1820s, has had a post office of the same name since 1828.

Before the town

No Native American village, trail, or site specific to Springfield Township is documented in the sources consulted. Unlike most of Mahoning County, the township was never part of the Connecticut Western Reserve; it belonged to Columbiana County until 1846.

Timeline

  1. — Peter Musser of York County, Pennsylvania, buys four sections in the southeast corner of the township and, with his son-in-law Israel Warner, begins the German settlement near the later Petersburg (Wikipedia places the community's founding in the 1790s, which the county histories do not support).
  2. — Daniel Miller of Adams County, Pennsylvania, settles on section 18 in the west of the township, and C. Seidner and his son-in-law C. Mentzer come from Hagerstown the same year; John Summers of York County settles section 5.
  3. — Springfield is organized for civil purposes when Columbiana County is erected, one of the county's first townships (May 10 in Mack's list); Peter Musser has saw- and grist-mills on Honey Creek.
  4. — Peter Musser plats the village later named Petersburg for him (the 1882 history says only that he founded it before 1810; his saw- and grist-mills were running by 1803).
  5. — A post office called Musser's Mill opens to serve the settlement (the 1882 history gives Jacob Musser as postmaster in 1811, the 1879 history John Musser).
  6. — Jacob Musser is postmaster at Musser's Mill, where James Wallace begins to trade about 1815 and later runs the hotel.
  7. — The post office is renamed Petersburgh.
  8. — New Springfield is platted in the southern part of the township.
  9. — John Miller puts up a grist-mill on Honey Creek near the state line, run by him and his family until a few years before 1882; New Springfield and New Middletown had both been laid out before this year.
  10. — A post office called New Springfield begins operating and continues to the present.
  11. — Jacob Musser becomes justice of the peace at Petersburg and holds the office to 1875.
  12. — Springfield Township, previously part of Columbiana County, is added to the newly organized Mahoning County.
  13. — The Springfield and Adjoining Townships Mutual Fire Insurance Company is organized in spring with about 200 members; by 1879 it has 930 policies on farm property.
  14. — R. C. Bean establishes a foundry in Petersburg for plows and light castings; by 1874 a steam flouring-mill is built by Maurer and Elder Brothers.
  15. — Williams's history counts about 500 people in Petersburg, 350 in New Springfield and 250 in New Middletown; the township's coal mines on section 7 yield about 2,500 tons a year.
  16. — Petersburg's post office is renamed a final time, from Petersburgh to Petersburg.
  17. — The Petersburg Inn, believed built around 1800 and one of the township's oldest structures, burns to the ground.

Stories

The township that was never part of the Western Reserve

Most of Mahoning County's townships trace to the Connecticut Western Reserve, surveyed from 1796 and settled by New England families under the Connecticut Land Company. Springfield Township took a different path entirely: it belonged to Columbiana County, organized separately from federal land outside the Reserve, and its earliest settlers, from about 1801, were German families arriving from Pennsylvania rather than Connecticut Yankees. Peter Musser founded the township's oldest village before 1810 and gave it his name; its post office, opened in 1807 as Musser's Mill, went through two further name changes -- to Petersburgh in 1819 and finally Petersburg in 1893 -- before it was joined to Mahoning County altogether. That union came only in 1846, when the Ohio Legislature carved Mahoning out of Trumbull and, to round out the new county, added Springfield along with four other formerly Columbiana townships (Beaver, Goshen, Green and Smith). The result is a county with two distinct settlement stories folded into one set of borders: a Western Reserve north settled from Connecticut, and a southern strip, Springfield among it, settled by Pennsylvania Germans under an entirely different land system.
