How Youngstown began
Youngstown began in 1796 when New York surveyor John Young purchased roughly 15,560 acres of the Connecticut Western Reserve along the Mahoning River, land formally recorded in his name in 1802; the settlement he founded became a farming and coal town, then, after the Civil War, one of the country's great iron and steel centers. Chartered as a city in 1867 and made the Mahoning County seat in 1876, Youngstown's mills employed tens of thousands through the first half of the twentieth century and its population peaked near 170,000 in 1930. The September 19, 1977 shutdown of Youngstown Sheet and Tube's Campbell Works, remembered as "Black Monday," began a collapse of the local steel industry from which the city never recovered, and its population has fallen by roughly two-thirds since 1960. Today Youngstown remains the Mahoning County seat and anchor of the Mahoning Valley, its downtown and Mill Creek Park still carrying the architecture and institutions the steel era built.

Where the name comes from
The city and township are named for John Young, the New York surveyor and land speculator who purchased the original 15,560-acre township from the Western Reserve Land Company in 1797 and whose name the settlement carried from its founding.
Before the town
No Native American village, trail, or site specific to the Youngstown town site itself is documented in the sources consulted. The Mahoning Valley around the future city lay within the range of the historic-era nations who hunted and traveled the region before the Connecticut Western Reserve was surveyed and sold; the area's deeper Native history includes the Whittlesey culture believed to have occupied parts of northeastern Ohio into the 1600s. Nothing in the sources reviewed places a named Native settlement within present Youngstown.

Black Monday
On the morning of September 19, 1977, Youngstown Sheet and Tube announced without warning that it was closing its Campbell Works, furloughing 5,000 workers at once. The company, founded in Youngstown in 1900 by George Wick and James Campbell, had once employed 27,000 people across the Mahoning Valley and was among the largest steelmakers in the country. The Campbell Works closure was followed by the sale of the company's Brier Hill and Indiana operations to Jones and Laughlin Steel, and Brier Hill itself shut down in 1979 as the broader steel industry contracted; Brier Hill did not reopen until 1986, and then only as a much smaller operation under Cargill's North Star Steel division. Locally the September 1977 shutdown is remembered simply as "Black Monday," the day the Mahoning Valley's steel economy began to come apart, a collapse the region has never fully reversed.
The Million Dollar Playground
Youngstown's South Side amusement park began in 1899 as Terminal Park, built by the Youngstown Park and Falls Street Railway Company at the end of a trolley line -- a common arrangement in the era, meant to generate weekend fares, and one reason admission was free; visitors paid only the cost of the trolley ride. Renamed Idora Park, it grew into what boosters called "Youngstown's Million Dollar Playground," adding the Jack Rabbit coaster and a ballroom in 1910 and, in 1930, the Wild Cat, a 3,000-foot, 85-foot-tall wooden coaster designed by Herbert Paul Schmeck that by the 1980s still ranked among the top ten roller coasters in the world. The park began charging admission for the first time only in 1967, under a $2.50 pay-one-price policy. On April 26, 1984, a fire tore through the park, destroying the Wild Cat, the Lost River ride, eleven concession stands and the park office; Idora Park closed for good on September 16, 1984, and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1993, a memorial to a ride that no longer existed.
A surveyor's name on the land
Youngstown carries the name of a man who by most accounts never lived there long. John Young, a New York surveyor and land speculator, bought roughly 15,560 acres of the Connecticut Western Reserve along the Mahoning River and Mill Creek from the Western Reserve Land Company on February 9, 1797, paying $16,085 for the township, though the purchase was not formally recorded until August 19, 1802. Real settlement followed quickly: by 1798 Pittsburgh native James Hillman and his wife Catherine Dougherty were among the first European American families living permanently near Mill Creek, well before the township organized as Youngstown Township in 1813. The town Young's purchase made possible grew slowly as a farming and milling community, then explosively after the Civil War as coal and iron, and later steel, turned it into one of Ohio's largest industrial cities -- all carrying forward the name of the land speculator who bought the ground but did not build the city on it.
