Life story
James Anson Campbell was born September 11, 1854, in Ohltown, Ohio. He studied business at Hiram College and began as a hardware salesman and furniture store manager, then founded the Youngstown Ice Company.
In 1895 he became superintendent of the Mahoning Valley Iron Company. In 1900 he became secretary of Youngstown Sheet and Tube, vice president in 1902 and president in 1904, then chairman.
He steered the firm through the 1916 East Youngstown riot, after which the area was renamed Campbell in 1922, and the Steel Strike of 1919. In World War I he directed steel tubular allocation for the American Iron and Steel Institute and received the French Legion of Honor.
A 1931 merger with Bethlehem Steel failed in the face of local opposition. He died in Youngstown on September 20, 1933; his only son, Louis, died less than two years later.
