How Austintown Township, Mahoning County began

Austintown Township was laid out in 1793 within the Connecticut Western Reserve and named for Calvin Austin, a Warren resident and Western Reserve land agent and judge; John McCollum of New Jersey became its first settler in 1794. The township grew slowly through the nineteenth century on farming and, by 1880, coal mining, which had brought its population to 2,502; two structures from that era, an 1814 log house and the 1830-1831 Judge William Shaw Anderson stone house, still stand and are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. After World War II, suburban growth spreading west from Youngstown transformed the township, and the U.S. Census Bureau designated the built-up portion the Austintown census-designated place in 1980. Austintown remains a large Youngstown-Warren-area suburb of about 30,000 people, its two surviving early houses now historic-society museums.

Settled 1793 (township laid out); 1794 (John McCollum, first settler), platted 1793, within the Connecticut Western Reserve, incorporated Township government; the built-up area became the Austintown census-designated place in 1980, by Named for Calvin Austin, Western Reserve land agent and judge from Warren; settled first by John McCollum of New Jersey.

Where the name comes from

Austintown Township is named for Calvin Austin, a resident of Warren, Ohio and a Western Reserve land agent and judge; he later sold 150.5 acres in the township to John Packard in 1814, on which Packard built the log house that survives today as the Austintown Log House.

Before the town

No Native American village, trail, or site specific to Austintown Township is documented in the sources consulted. The township lies within the Connecticut Western Reserve, land ceded by the Wyandot, Ottawa, Chippewa, Munsee, Delaware, Shawnee, and Potawatomi in the 1805 Treaty of Fort Industry.

Stories

A log house rediscovered

In 1814, land agent Calvin Austin -- the man the township itself is named for -- sold 150.5 acres to John Packard for $500. Packard and his second wife Mary raised ten children in the log house he built on it, using a steeple-notch corner-joint technique that later analysis showed predated 1824. The cabin passed out of public memory as farmland around it changed hands for a century and a half, until it was rediscovered and restored beginning in 1973. Added to the National Register of Historic Places on July 30, 1974, it received a bicentennial rededication on July 4, 1976, funded by a $2,500 grant from the Ohio American Revolution Bicentennial Commission. The Austintown Historical Society now maintains the log house as a museum with free monthly tours, the only structure in the township that still shows what an original Western Reserve settler's home looked like.

A stone house that outlived its builders -- and served the water system

William Strock hired builder William McClure around 1830-1831 to raise a Federal and Classical Revival house from sandstone blocks weighing as much as 750 pounds, quarried at Stony Ridge on what is now South Turner Road. An 1921 county history credits the house to McClure and dates it 1830; the National Register record says 1831 and lists Strock himself as architect -- a discrepancy neither source resolves. The house changed hands repeatedly: sold to Francis Henry in 1851, acquired by David Anderson in 1863, and inherited in 1890 by his son William Shaw Anderson, later a judge, whose name the house has carried ever since. In 1929 it passed to an institution with no connection to the original farm family at all: the Mahoning Valley Sanitary District, the public water authority that still serves Youngstown and the valley today, which purchased the property outright. The Anderson House was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1976.
