How Jackson Township, Mahoning County began

Jackson Township, in the Connecticut Western Reserve, was first organized in 1815 under the name West Austintown before later being renamed for President Andrew Jackson. Early pioneers, including Samuel Calhoun, Andrew Gault, William Orr and Samuel Riddle, settled following the same wave of Western Reserve migration that founded neighboring Youngstown and Austintown townships. The township's best-known landmark dates from the twentieth century rather than its pioneer era: the Basilica and National Shrine of Our Lady of Lebanon in North Jackson, a replica of the Marian shrine at Harissa, Lebanon, begun by Maronite Catholic priest Msgr. Peter Eid with an 80-acre land purchase in 1961, dedicated in 1965, and elevated to minor basilica status by Pope Francis in 2014.

Settled Settlement following the general Western Reserve pattern of the early 1800s, platted First organized in 1815 as West Austintown, incorporated Renamed Jackson Township, honoring President Andrew Jackson, at an unspecified later date, by Early pioneers including Samuel Calhoun, Andrew Gault, William Orr, James Starnford, Samuel Riddle and Joseph McInrue.

Where the name comes from

Stories

A piece of Lebanon in a Mahoning Valley township

Nothing about Jackson Township's founding as West Austintown in 1815 suggests it would one day hold one of the most architecturally distinctive religious buildings in Ohio. That changed in 1961, when Msgr. Peter Eid, serving the Maronite Catholic community around Youngstown, bought 80 acres in North Jackson to build a shrine to Our Lady of Lebanon -- the idea having originated in a 1960 conversation between American Maronite priests and Washington's Archbishop Patrick O'Boyle about where a national shrine should go, with Eid then suggesting that the Maronites of the Youngstown area build it instead. Ground broke in August 1964, and by July 1965 workers had placed a statue of the Virgin Mary atop the shrine's tower, a replica of the original Marian shrine at Harissa, Lebanon. The finished building, costing about $200,000, was dedicated by Auxiliary Bishop James Malone of the Youngstown diocese on August 15, 1965, and Pope Francis elevated it to the rank of minor basilica on July 8, 2014.

The wagon on the schoolhouse roof

Education came slowly to Jackson Township, according to the 1907 county history. The first log schoolhouse stood on the side of a steep bank in the southeastern part, with a roof of loose boards weighted down and a floor of split timber. One of its first teachers, John Fullerton, seems to have been a practical joker. The story goes that he once helped some of the older boys hoist a wagon onto the roof of the schoolhouse, and when the wagon's owner came to him in a rage to complain of his pupils' conduct, Fullerton gravely promised to find out who did it and punish them as they deserved. Until about 1840 English was taught part of the time and German the rest. Then a school director, Samuel Jones, canvassed the settlers, found nearly all preferred English, and made the change. The township was then divided into eight districts, and by 1907 the district schools were being drawn together into a graded school at North Jackson.
