How Poland began

Poland village grew up on Yellow Creek at the heart of Poland Township, the first parcel surveyed in the Connecticut Western Reserve, and incorporated in 1866. Its defining institution was Poland Academy, opened in 1830 above a general store by a Presbyterian minister and reorganized in 1849 as Poland Seminary; the school produced two very different figures of national note, President William McKinley, who graduated in 1859, and journalist Ida Tarbell, who taught geology, languages and mathematics there as head teacher from 1881 to 1883 before leaving to become one of America's first great investigative reporters. The seminary building itself partly collapsed in 1895 and was demolished, but its name survives in Poland Seminary High School, created when the village sold the site to the school district in 1909 on condition the name be kept. The village's South Main Street Historic District still preserves the concentration of early-nineteenth-century buildings, including the stone tavern from whose porch McKinley enlisted in 1861, that make Poland one of Mahoning County's best-preserved historic downtowns.

Settled 1799 (Jonathan Fowler and family, the township's first permanent settlers, arrive in the village's future location), platted Within Township One, Range One, surveyed 1796, the first parcel surveyed in the Western Reserve, incorporated August 7, 1866, by Surveyed for the Connecticut Land Company by Moses Warren, Amos Spafford and Turhand Kirtland; settled by Jonathan Fowler.

Where the name comes from

Accounts of the name disagree. Wikipedia's article on Poland says the village was named to honor the country of Poland for its support during the American Revolutionary War, possibly for a specific Polish hero, though an alternative 1905 account credits an early proprietor named George Poland. The Poland Township Bicentennial Society's own local history instead says founders Turhand Kirtland and Jonathan Fowler simply wanted a name unlikely to be duplicated elsewhere, to avoid confusion in mail delivery, with no mention of a Polish namesake. Both accounts are given here since the sources do not agree.

Before the town

No Native American village, trail, or site specific to Poland village is documented in the sources consulted, beyond the Poland Township Bicentennial Society's account that Native visitors continued to pass through the settlement in its first years and were curious enough about Jonathan Fowler's infant daughter Rachel, born in 1800, to repeatedly take and hold her.

Timeline

1. 1799 — Jonathan Fowler and family become the first permanent settlers of the future village site on Yellow Creek.
2. 1830 — Poland Academy opens, founded by a Presbyterian minister named Bradley teaching from a room above a general store.
3. 1845 — Poland Academy closes for lack of funding after operating for several years on College Street under a successor, Lynch.
4. 1849 — Barnabus F. Lee opens a proprietary girls' academy on College Street while local Presbyterians open a boys' academy; Lee's school incorporates in 1854 as Poland Female College.
5. 1855 — The boys' academy building burns and is never rebuilt.
6. 1859 — William McKinley, later the 25th President of the United States, graduates from the Poland academy.
7. 1861 — McKinley enlists in the Union Army from the porch of the old stone tavern on Poland's main street.
8. 1862 — The school reorganizes as Poland Seminary under a new board of trustees amid ongoing financial difficulty.
9. 1866 — Poland is incorporated as a village on August 7, after a petition signed by 63 voters.
10. 1871 — The Presbytery of Mahoning takes over operation of Poland Seminary as a Christian institution.
11. 1881-1883 — Ida Tarbell, later a pioneering investigative journalist, serves as preceptress (head teacher) of Poland Seminary, teaching geology, botany, geometry, trigonometry, Greek, Latin, French and German for a salary of $500 a year.
12. 1895 — Portions of the aging Poland Seminary building collapse; the remainder is demolished.
13. 1909 — The seminary site is sold to the city school district on June 21, on condition that the high school retain the Poland Seminary name.

Stories

A president and a muckraker, one classroom apart

Poland Seminary, in its various incorporations, produced two figures who shaped American public life in almost opposite ways. William McKinley graduated from the school in 1859, went on to enlist for the Union Army from a tavern porch on Poland's Main Street in 1861, and became the 25th President of the United States in 1897. Two decades after McKinley's graduation, Ida Tarbell arrived from Pennsylvania to take the demanding post of preceptress, or head teacher, from 1881 to 1883, responsible for teaching geology, botany, geometry, trigonometry, Greek, Latin, French and German all at once for $500 a year. The workload and low pay eventually drove her back to Pennsylvania and into journalism, where she became one of the era's most influential muckrakers, her 1904 investigation of Standard Oil helping define investigative reporting as a genre. Neither the school building where McKinley studied nor the one where Tarbell taught survives -- portions collapsed in 1895 and the rest was torn down -- but when the village sold the site to the school district in 1909, it made keeping the Poland Seminary name a condition of the sale, and Poland Seminary High School carries it still.
