How Butler County began

Butler County was created by an act of the Ohio General Assembly passed March 24, 1803, effective May 1, 1803, carved from the northern part of Hamilton County a few weeks after Ohio became a state, and named for General Richard Butler, an Irish-born Revolutionary War officer killed in 1791 at St. Clair's Defeat on the Wabash. It lies in the Great Miami and Little Miami river valleys, land the Shawnee and Miami used as hunting ground and crossed by named trails before the United States claimed it by the 1786 Treaty of Fort Finney and the 1795 Treaty of Greenville, and the county holds Fortified Hill Works, a roughly 2,000-year-old Hopewell hilltop earthwork in Ross Township. Hamilton, built up around the 1791 frontier outpost Fort Hamilton, became the county seat, and Miami University in Oxford was chartered in 1809 on a township Congress had set aside for the purpose. The county industrialized around the Great Miami River's water power and, later, steel and paper manufacturing in Hamilton and Middletown, survived a catastrophic flood in March 1913 that killed nearly 100 people in Hamilton alone, and today combines the industrial cities of Hamilton and Middletown with fast-growing Cincinnati-suburb townships in its south and small farming townships and villages in its north and west.

Hamilton was named the county seat when Butler County organized in 1803; a first courthouse went up in 1806 and a second on the same site in 1817. The present Butler County Courthouse, a Second Empire and Italianate building designed by David W. Gibbs, had its cornerstone laid October 29, 1885 and was completed in 1889; it survived a 1912 tower fire that killed three firefighters and served as a temporary morgue after the 1913 flood. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on June 22, 1981.
