How Fairfield began

Fairfield's land came out of the 1788 Symmes Purchase, and its town center, Symmes Corner, was founded by Celadon Symmes, great-nephew of Judge John Cleves Symmes; the surrounding township stayed agricultural, with small rail hamlets at Fair Play, Furmandale, and Stockton, until the mid-20th century. Fairfield incorporated as a village in 1954, after residents organized specifically to avoid being annexed into neighboring Hamilton once General Motors' Fisher Body plant located nearby, and became a city by 1960. Explosive suburban growth followed: population rose from 9,734 in 1960 to 39,729 in 1990, and in 1995 the city withdrew from the three surrounding townships as its own independent 'Heritage Township' area, completing its separation from its rural origins.

Settled 1787-1788 (Symmes Purchase settlement), incorporated 1954 (village); city by 1960, by Citizens' incorporation vote of 738 to 216, held to forestall annexation by Hamilton after Fisher Body's arrival.

Where the name comes from

Fairfield takes its name from Fairfield Township, the surrounding civil township organized in the Symmes Purchase era; the city's own historic center was known locally as Symmes Corner, for Celadon Symmes, great-nephew of Judge John Cleves Symmes, whose 1788 purchase of the land between the Great and Little Miami rivers opened the area to settlement.

Before the town

No specific Native village, trail, or burial site documented within Fairfield's own boundary was found in the sources consulted. General sources describe the wider area as Shawnee and Miami hunting and travel ground before the 1795 Treaty of Greenville, with Hopewell- and Adena-era earthworks recorded elsewhere in Butler County, but nothing site-specific inside present Fairfield was found.

Nations recorded here: Miami, Shawnee.

  3. — The Cincinnati, Hamilton & Dayton Railway reaches the area, giving rise to the small rail hamlets of Fair Play, Furmandale, and Stockton.

Stories

A city founded to keep from being annexed

Through the first half of the twentieth century, the land that became Fairfield stayed what it had been since the Symmes Purchase: farm country organized around small rail-line hamlets like Fair Play, Furmandale, and Stockton, with the crossroads called Symmes Corner as its closest thing to a center. That changed when General Motors' Fisher Body division built a plant nearby, and neighboring Hamilton began eyeing the surrounding township for annexation. Rather than be absorbed into the larger city, area residents organized their own incorporation drive; a referendum in July 1954 passed 738 votes to 216, and Fairfield became a village in its own right that year, reaching city status by 1960. The strategy worked almost too well: the young city's population then nearly quadrupled in three decades, from 9,734 residents in 1960 to 39,729 by 1990, an escape from annexation that turned into one of Butler County's fastest-growing cities.

The plain little church that outlasted its congregation

In 1843, members of an Old School Presbyterian congregation drawn from churches in Hamilton, Springdale, and Ross built a meetinghouse on land Benjamin Symmes donated, spending $1,180 on a building deliberately free of ornament -- a common country-church design built for function, not display. The congregation itself did not last long at that location; by the 1850s its membership had largely relocated south, and the chapel passed into other community uses, serving at various times as a schoolhouse and gathering hall until 1968. By 1980, when Fairfield's historical society had taken ownership of the property and successfully listed it on the National Register, the modest chapel had become one of the few pre-Civil War buildings still standing anywhere in the city -- a distinction that outlasted the building itself, since the structure was later lost and only an open lot on Pleasant Avenue marks where it stood.

87% of these days are measurements from a gauge inside Fairfield; the rest are estimated from the nearest gauges around it.

44,452 days of records, 1893-01-01 to 2026-10-30. Source: NOAA NCEI GHCN-Daily, 3,240 gauges in and around Ohio. A day is "gauged" when a gauge standing inside the boundary reported it, and the value is the mean of those gauges. Otherwise it is interpolated by inverse distance from every gauge reporting within 50 miles. Nothing is carried forward, back-filled or smoothed. Against NOAA nClimDiv county monthly precipitation over 136,848 complete county-months (checked 2026-11-01): correlation 0.9515, median absolute difference 0.217 in a month. Built 2026-11-01 from the Cracked Buckeye precipitation archive. Snow is the softer number — snowfall is measured by hand with a ruler, no agency publishes a gridded county snowfall series, and blowing snow defeats every observer.

Facilities are placed on the map from Ohio EPA's own map layers, EPA's Facility Registry, coordinates written in the filings, or a geocoded street address. A permit filed under a private person's name (most are household septic systems) is counted but never named, placed or linked; licenses for individual workers and open-burning notices are left out entirely.
