How Milford Township, Butler County began
Milford Township, the seventh township organized in Butler County, was formed from St. Clair Township on December 2, 1805; its western half split off in 1811 to become Oxford Township, leaving the township roughly its present boundaries between Oxford and Middletown. Its small unincorporated communities -- Darrtown, Collinsville, and Somerville -- remain lightly populated farm country, with 3,523 residents recorded in 2020. The township's best-known native son is Andrew L. Harris, born there in 1835, who fought at Gettysburg, served as Ohio's lieutenant governor under William McKinley, and was elected the state's 44th governor in 1905; in 2005 the township's bicentennial renamed U.S. Route 127 through the area the Governor Andrew L. Harris Bicentennial Roadway.

From a Milford Township farm to the governor's office
Andrew Lintner Harris was born on his family's farm in Milford Township on November 17, 1835, and after graduating from nearby Miami University in 1860, he enlisted as a private when the Civil War broke out. He rose to colonel of the 75th Ohio Infantry, and on July 1, 1863, the first day at Gettysburg, he led his men in a fighting withdrawal through the town's contested streets back to Cemetery Hill, holding the line long enough to help the Union Army regroup on the high ground that would decide the battle two days later. He was later brevetted a brigadier general, though his record was not spotless -- he suffered an embarrassing defeat at the Battle of Gainesville, Florida in August 1864. Harris carried his wartime reputation into a long political career: Ohio state senator from 1866 to 1870, Preble County probate judge, lieutenant governor under William McKinley from 1892 to 1896, and finally the state's 44th governor from 1906 to 1909, during which he signed a law banning corporate political donations. The Harris family kept its Milford Township farm as an Ohio Century Farm long after Andrew's death in 1915, and in 2005 the township's bicentennial renamed the stretch of U.S. Route 127 running through the area in his honor.
