How Madison Township, Butler County began
Madison Township was organized May 7, 1810 by Butler County commissioners acting on a resident petition, carved from Lemon Township and named for President James Madison; it held its first township election May 19, 1810 as the ninth township created in the county. Its far south, on the St. Clair Township line, grew into the unincorporated community of Woodsdale, settled in the 19th century by an Amish/Mennonite Augspurger family whose farms, rowhouses, and schoolhouse survive as a National Register historic district. The township also holds the Great Mound, an Adena-culture earthwork that is the largest surviving mound in Butler County, at 43 feet high.

Where the name comes from
Madison Township was named for James Madison, the sitting U.S. President at its 1810 creation; it is one of twenty townships of that name in Ohio.
Before the town
Madison Township holds the Great Mound, an Adena-culture earthen mound in Section 19 of the township, 43 feet high with a circumference of about 511 feet and a volume of roughly 825,000 cubic feet -- the largest surviving mound in Butler County and among the largest in southwestern Ohio. In 1879 locals dug into its summit and found bones and the remnants of fires; roughly 75 percent of the mound is believed to remain archaeologically undisturbed. A 1990 sightline demonstration showed the mound could be seen from, and could see, the Hill-Kinder Mound more than 11 miles away as well as the Miamisburg Mound near Dayton, evidence for its possible role in a long-distance visual signaling or ceremonial network among Adena mound sites. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places October 7, 1971. This site's Wikipedia article title carries a Middletown parenthetical, but its documented location places it in Madison Township, and it is recorded here rather than under the city of Middletown for that reason.

A Swiss-German settlement on the Wayne-Madison Road
In the unincorporated crossroads community of Woodsdale, on Madison Township's southern edge, a cluster of farms, worker rowhouses, and a one-room schoolhouse trace back to an Amish/Mennonite family named Augspurger, part of a Swiss-German settlement that put down roots in the township in the 19th century. Frederick and John Augspurger built farmsteads that still stand south of Trenton, the family ran a paper company whose workers lived in the rowhouses along Wayne-Madison Road, and by 1868 the community had built its own schoolhouse, later converted into a private residence after it stopped teaching students. Eight Augspurger-connected properties across three jurisdictions -- Madison Township, neighboring St. Clair Township, and the city of Trenton -- were listed together on the National Register of Historic Places in 1984, preserving a rare intact record of a 19th-century religious farming settlement that has otherwise mostly vanished from Butler County's landscape.
A mound built to be seen from eleven miles away
At 43 feet tall, the Great Mound in Madison Township is the largest earthwork the Adena culture left standing anywhere in Butler County, an enormous cone of hand-moved earth totaling some 825,000 cubic feet. For more than a century after Ohio settlement, its size was treated mainly as a curiosity; in 1879 locals dug into the top looking for artifacts and found scattered bones and the ash of old fires, disturbing the summit without seriously damaging the mound as a whole -- about three-quarters of it is thought to remain archaeologically intact today. Its real significance emerged only in 1990, when researchers demonstrated that a person standing on the Great Mound could see, and be seen from, the Hill-Kinder Mound more than eleven miles away, and that both sat within sight of the well-known Miamisburg Mound near Dayton. That kind of deliberate long-distance visibility suggests Adena builders were not simply marking a single sacred spot in Madison Township, but placing this mound as one link in a signaling or ceremonial network stretched across the wider Miami valley landscape.
