How Liberty Township, Butler County began

Liberty Township's first settler, John Nelson, arrived in 1796, seven years before Ohio statehood and before the township itself was organized in 1803. It takes its name from Liberty, Pennsylvania, suggested by early resident John Morrow, brother of Ohio Governor Jeremiah Morrow, in honor of his hometown. West Chester Township was split off from Liberty's southern end in 1823, and for most of the 19th and 20th centuries the township remained rural, crossed by the Miami and Erie Canal's northwest corner, the Dayton Short Line railroad, and the old Cincinnati and Dayton Turnpike (later U.S. Route 25). Like its neighbors, it has urbanized rapidly since 2000, with population climbing from 22,819 to 37,259 between the 2000 and 2010 censuses.

Settled 1796, incorporated 1803, by First settled by John Nelson in 1796; organized as a township in 1803 on the suggestion of John Morrow, brother of Governor Jeremiah Morrow.

Where the name comes from

Liberty Township was named for Liberty, Pennsylvania, at the suggestion of John Morrow, a resident of the township at its 1803 formation and brother of Ohio Governor Jeremiah Morrow, in honor of Morrow's hometown.

Before the town

No Native village, trail, or burial site specifically within Liberty Township was found in the sources consulted; the wider county record is of Shawnee and Miami presence in the Great and Little Miami valleys. Several National Register-listed buildings (the Tytus, John B., House; Hotel Manchester; and the Main Street Commercial Historic District, all ZIP 45044) are Middletown sites that share a ZIP code with parts of Liberty Township rather than buildings inside the township itself, and are recorded instead under Middletown.

Stories

A schoolhouse that outlasted the farms around it

In 1832, Nicholas Curtis donated a parcel of Liberty Township land to School District No. 4, with local resident Elijah Hughes serving as the district's director; the community built its first schoolhouse there to educate the children of the farms scattered along the township's dirt roads. That original building eventually wore out, and in 1887 the district replaced it with the brick structure that still stands: a rectangular one-room schoolhouse with a stone foundation, corbeled brick cornices, arched keystone lintels over the windows and door, and a projecting entry that once carried a small bell tower calling students in from the fields. The Hughes School was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1976, by which point the one-room country school it represented had long since given way to consolidated districts -- and within another generation, much of the farmland around it had given way in turn to the subdivisions and shopping centers of a fast-growing Cincinnati suburb.
