How Hamilton began

Hamilton grew up around Fort Hamilton, a frontier supply post General Arthur St. Clair's troops built on the Great Miami River in 1791 and named for Treasury Secretary Alexander Hamilton, with a civilian settlement platted alongside it as Fairfield in 1794. It became the seat of Butler County in 1803 and, after decades split with its river-crossing twin Rossville, grew through the 19th century into a mill and manufacturing city powered by a hydraulic canal system, making paper, safes, and machine tools. A catastrophic flood in March 1913 killed roughly 100 residents and reshaped the city's relationship with the river; Hamilton rebuilt as an industrial center through the 20th century and is today Butler County's largest city and government seat.

Where the name comes from

Hamilton takes its name from Fort Hamilton, built in 1791 and named to honor Alexander Hamilton, the first U.S. Secretary of the Treasury under President Washington; the fort was the first link in a chain built north from Fort Washington (Cincinnati) during the Northwest Indian War.

Before the town

No source consulted names a specific Native village, camp, or burial site within the present city of Hamilton; the county-wide picture includes the Fortified Hill Works earthwork a few miles downriver in Ross Township and the Shawnee-Miami trail crossing the Great Miami valley carried. Fort Hamilton itself, built in 1791 on the Great Miami River, was a U.S. military supply post in the Northwest Indian War against the Miami, Shawnee, and allied nations rather than a Native site, and it was abandoned after the 1795 Treaty of Greenville ended the fighting and opened the area to the settlement that produced the city.

Timeline

  1. — General Arthur St. Clair's troops complete Fort Hamilton on the Great Miami River, the first fort in a chain built north from Fort Washington during the Northwest Indian War.
  2. — A civilian settlement grows up around the abandoned fort and is platted under the name Fairfield.
  3. — Butler County organizes and names Hamilton its county seat.
  4. — Hamilton is first incorporated as a town; it loses incorporation in 1815 for failing to hold elections.
  5. — Hamilton is reincorporated and united with Rossville, its twin town across the Great Miami River; the two separate again in 1831 and reunite for good in 1854.
  6. — The Hamilton Hydraulic, a canal-fed water-power system, is built and begins operating in January 1845, driving two decades of industrial and population growth.

Stories

One river, two rival towns

For much of the nineteenth century Hamilton and Rossville faced off across the Great Miami River as separate, competing towns, one on each bank of the same crossing point that Fort Hamilton had guarded. Hamilton was first incorporated in 1810, lost that status in 1815 when it failed to hold required elections, and was reincorporated in 1827 in a union with Rossville across the water. That marriage did not last: the two towns split apart again in 1831 and spent more than two decades as rivals, each building its own commercial district, churches, and civic identity. By 1850 Hamilton counted 3,210 residents to Rossville's 1,447, and in April 1854 voters in both towns finally approved a lasting union, completed the following February. Hamilton was chartered as a city in 1857, and Rossville's older brick storefronts and houses survive today as the Rossville Historic District, listed on the National Register in 1975 as a reminder that the city was built from two towns rather than one.

The exclamation point that never stuck

In May 1986, taking a cue from the Rodgers and Hammerstein musical 'Oklahoma!', Hamilton's city council voted 5 to 1 to add an exclamation point to the city's name, officially restyling it 'Hamilton!' on local letterhead and welcome signs as a piece of civic boosterism. The change was purely a local council resolution: the United States Board on Geographic Names, which sets official place names for federal maps and records, never adopted the punctuation, and neither did most cartographers or the postal service. The exclamation point lingered for years on city vehicles and stationery as a piece of local color before fading from routine use, an oddity of 1980s small-city marketing that outlived its own novelty.
