Deep dives about Monroe

Long reads built from maps, newspapers and public records. All deep dives

How Monroe began

Monroe was established in 1817 along the Dayton and Cincinnati Pike (the Great Miami Pike, now Cincinnati-Dayton Road) and named for President James Monroe. It stayed a small crossroads settlement for nearly a century and a half, counting only 119 residents in the early 1830s and still under 400 as late as 1880, before exploding into a Cincinnati-Dayton corridor suburb in the second half of the 20th century: population jumped from roughly 365 in the 1960s baseline to 2,193 by 1960 and reached 15,412 by 2020. Modern Monroe, straddling Interstate 75 between Cincinnati and Dayton, has become known for large retail and entertainment development along that corridor, a marked contrast to its 19th-century identity as a one-store pike town.

Settled 1817, platted 1817, by Settlers along the Dayton and Cincinnati Pike.

Where the name comes from

Monroe was named for James Monroe, the fifth President of the United States, who was in office at the time the town was established in 1817.

Before the town

No Native village, trail, or burial site specifically within Monroe was found in the sources consulted. Shawnee and Miami people were present in the county along the Great and Little Miami valleys, which Monroe's pike and, later, Interstate 75 corridor both roughly follow.

Stories

A one-store pike town, seen from the church steeple

For most of the 19th century, Monroe was little more than a stop on the Great Miami Pike, the Dayton-to-Cincinnati road that carried travelers and freight along the same corridor Interstate 75 would later follow. An undated photograph taken by local photographer Marion G. Warner, likely from the steps of the First Presbyterian Church, looks north along the pike toward South Street (today's Lebanon Street), showing a scattering of houses and storefronts that made up the whole of the town in its first century. It was a modest place by any measure: one store and 119 people in the early 1830s, not even 400 residents as late as 1880, and briefly fewer than 300 again in the early 20th century. The photograph's church-steeple vantage point captures a Monroe that still resembled the crossroads settlement of 1817, decades before the interstate and Cincinnati's northward suburban growth turned the same ground into a fast-growing retail and residential corridor.

Mostly estimated. Only 1% of these days come from a gauge standing inside Monroe - the rest are worked out from the nearest gauges around it, so read them as close estimates rather than readings.

48,001 days of records, 1893-01-01 to 2026-10-29. Source: NOAA NCEI GHCN-Daily, 3,240 gauges in and around Ohio. A day is "gauged" when a gauge standing inside the boundary reported it, and the value is the mean of those gauges. Otherwise it is interpolated by inverse distance from every gauge reporting within 50 miles. Nothing is carried forward, back-filled or smoothed. Against NOAA nClimDiv county monthly precipitation over 136,848 complete county-months (checked 2026-10-31): correlation 0.9515, median absolute difference 0.217 in a month. Built 2026-10-31 from the Cracked Buckeye precipitation archive. Snow is the softer number — snowfall is measured by hand with a ruler, no agency publishes a gridded county snowfall series, and blowing snow defeats every observer.

Facilities are placed on the map from Ohio EPA's own map layers, EPA's Facility Registry, coordinates written in the filings, or a geocoded street address. A permit filed under a private person's name (most are household septic systems) is counted but never named, placed or linked; licenses for individual workers and open-burning notices are left out entirely.
