How Saint Clair Township, Butler County began

St. Clair Township is one of Butler County's five original townships, organized by the county's Court of Quarter Sessions on May 10, 1803 and named for General Arthur St. Clair, governor of the Northwest Territory before Ohio statehood. Once much larger, it was steadily reduced as Milford and Wayne townships split off in 1805, Reily Township in 1807, and Hanover Township in 1811, and as the city of Hamilton later annexed land on the Great Miami River's west bank. Its southeastern portion holds part of Woodsdale, the unincorporated crossroads settled by the Amish/Mennonite Augspurger family, including the Samuel Augspurger House (1868) and the Augspurger Grist Mill; the rest of the township remains the small unincorporated communities of Overpeck and Williamsdale.

Incorporated 1803, by The Butler County Court of Quarter Sessions, as one of the county's five original townships.

Where the name comes from

St. Clair Township was named for General Arthur St. Clair, governor of the Northwest Territory before Ohio became a state; a second Ohio township of the same name exists in Columbiana County.

Before the town

No Native village, trail, or burial site specifically within St. Clair Township was found in the sources consulted. The township's namesake, Arthur St. Clair, was the losing commander at St. Clair's Defeat (1791), the U.S. Army's worst loss to a Native force, fought elsewhere in Ohio against the Western Confederacy that included the Miami and Shawnee who used this land.

Stories

A township whittled down by its own neighbors

St. Clair Township started out as one of only five townships in all of Butler County when it organized in 1803, covering a broad stretch of land named for the Northwest Territory's first governor. Over the following decades its own growth worked against it: as settlement filled in, the county repeatedly sliced new townships from St. Clair's territory rather than create them from scratch elsewhere, first Milford and Wayne in 1805, then Reily in 1807, then Hanover in 1811, with Oxford Township tracing its own origin back through Milford to the same original St. Clair ground. Even the city of Hamilton took a further bite once it began expanding across the Great Miami River. By the 21st century, what remained of the original township was reduced to a scattering of small unincorporated places -- Overpeck, Williamsdale, and part of Woodsdale -- a reminder that being first-organized in a growing county was no guarantee of staying largest.
