How Middletown began

Middletown grew from land Judge John Cleves Symmes bought from the Continental Congress in 1788; Stephen Vail Jr. platted 52 lots for the village along the Great Miami River in 1802, and it incorporated in 1833. Its name's origin is disputed among three local theories: for Vail's native Middletown, New Jersey; for its position at the head of navigation on the Great Miami; or for its location roughly midway between Dayton and Cincinnati. Reached by the Miami and Erie Canal from 1825, Middletown grew first as a farming and paper-milling town, then, after George Verity founded the American Rolling Mill Company (Armco) there in 1900, as a major steel city; John B. Tytus, a Middletown native and Armco engineer, invented the continuous wide-strip steel rolling process there in the 1920s that reshaped the world steel industry. The 1913 flood devastated the canal and much of the town; Middletown rebuilt around steelmaking, which continues today under Cleveland-Cliffs after its 2020 acquisition of AK Steel, and the city gained national attention as the setting of J.D. Vance's 2016 memoir 'Hillbilly Elegy.'

Where the name comes from

Middletown's name is not conclusively documented. Three theories are recorded: that founder Stephen Vail Jr. named it for his hometown of Middletown, New Jersey; that it marked the midway point of navigation on the Great Miami River; or that it sat roughly halfway between Dayton and Cincinnati. No single account is treated as authoritative in the sources consulted.

Before the town

No Native village, trail, or treaty site specifically inside Middletown's city limits was found in the sources consulted. One caution: Wikipedia's article on the 'Great Mound (Middletown, Ohio)' -- at 43 feet high and 511 feet in circumference, the largest surviving mound in Butler County -- carries 'Middletown' in its title but its own infobox places it in Section 19 of Madison Township, not inside the city of Middletown itself; it belongs to Madison Township, which shares the 45042 ZIP code with Middletown and could easily be conflated with the city.

Stories

The papermaking machine that remade steel

John Butler Tytus grew up in Middletown watching his family's paper mill run its Fourdrinier machines, which fed a continuous wet sheet of pulp through rollers to make paper in one unbroken pass. After his father's death forced the sale of the paper business, Tytus started over at the bottom in steel, working as 'a spare hand' at a local mill in 1904, and rose to run Armco's Middletown East Works by 1909. He never forgot the paper machines: if a continuous ribbon of pulp could be rolled thin without cutting the process into batches, he reasoned, the same idea should work for red-hot steel. Tytus drafted blueprints for a continuous wide-strip rolling mill in 1919, and in 1924 a plant built to his design began running in Ashland, Kentucky, producing steel sheet faster and cheaper than the old batch process ever could. By 1940 twenty-six mills worldwide used his method, Armco had made him a vice president in 1927, and in 1935 he won the steel industry's Gary Memorial Award. His Middletown home was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1976, and in 2012 he was inducted into the Steel Hall of Fame -- a Middletown paper-mill boy's memory turned into the way the world still makes sheet steel.

A steel town's second national story

Middletown built its modern identity on the American Rolling Mill Company, which George Verity founded there in 1900 and which grew into one of the country's major steelmakers, carrying the city through booms and downturns for more than a century under the Armco and later AK Steel names until Cleveland-Cliffs absorbed the company in 2020. That industrial arc took on a very different kind of national attention in 2016, when J.D. Vance published 'Hillbilly Elegy,' a memoir describing his family's move to Middletown from Jackson, Kentucky and their struggles as the steel economy that had drawn them there began to restructure and shed jobs. The book, and the 2020 film based on it, put Middletown at the center of a national conversation about industrial decline and the Appalachian migration that had built towns like it -- a second, unplanned chapter in the story the mills had started in 1900.
