How Fairfield Township, Butler County began

Fairfield Township traces to 1795, when the Hamilton County court of general quarter sessions created it and neighboring Springfield Township out of the northern reaches of Cincinnati Township, shortly after the Treaty of Greenville opened the region to settlement; it became part of Butler County when the county organized in 1802-1803. Named simply for its gently rolling terrain, the township surrounded the town of Fairfield until that community incorporated separately and eventually withdrew from the township entirely by 1995. In one of the stranger episodes in county history, the township briefly incorporated itself as the City of Indian Springs under special 1994 state legislation, a defensive move against annexation by Hamilton, only for a court to strike the enabling law down as unconstitutional in December 1996 and return the area to township status.

Incorporated 1795 (as part of Hamilton County; joined Butler County 1802-1803), by The Hamilton County court of general quarter sessions of the peace, dividing Cincinnati Township's northern reaches into Springfield and Fairfield townships.

Where the name comes from

Fairfield Township's name reflects the gentle, level topography of its land; it is one of seven townships of that name in Ohio.

Before the town

Fairfield Township holds Fairfield Township Works I, an earthwork site northeast of Hamilton recorded in National Register of Historic Places documentation as a Native American ceremonial complex with associated burials, listed November 5, 1971; the underlying National Register nomination record is thin and does not give a specific culture attribution, construction date, or detailed description beyond its function, and no fuller scholarly source was located to add such detail. Butler County's wider record includes Miami and Shawnee presence and the region's Hopewell and Adena earthworks. Note also that the Shuler & Benninghofen Woolen Mill, which shares this township's ZIP code (45015), is a historic industrial building whose National Register listing places it at 2350 Pleasant Ave. in the city of Hamilton, not inside Fairfield Township, and it is excluded here for that reason.

Stories

The city that lasted two years

By the early 1990s, Fairfield Township watched its namesake city and its larger neighbor Hamilton both eyeing its remaining unincorporated land for annexation, and township leaders concluded that becoming a city themselves was the only way to keep control of their own territory. Under a special act of the Ohio legislature, the township incorporated in 1994 as the City of Indian Springs, instantly converting thousands of township residents into city dwellers of a municipality that had not existed the year before. The maneuver did not survive a legal challenge: courts found the enabling legislation unconstitutional, and on December 20, 1996, the City of Indian Springs ceased to exist, its residents reverting to township status as if the two-year experiment had never happened. The episode left Fairfield Township exactly where it started, still governed as a township and still bordered by cities eager to expand, but with an unusual footnote in Ohio municipal history: for a little over two years, one of Ohio's most obscure cities was named for a spring that gave neither it nor most of its records any other trace.
