How Warren County began
Warren County was formed on March 24 (some sources say May 1), 1803, carved from the northern part of Hamilton County by Ohio's first General Assembly, and named for Dr. Joseph Warren, the Massachusetts physician and Revolutionary War major general who died at the Battle of Bunker Hill in 1775. It lies in the Little Miami and Great Miami river valleys, land that was Miami and Shawnee territory before the 1795 Treaty of Greenville, and it holds Fort Ancient, one of the largest prehistoric hilltop earthworks in North America. Settlement began in 1795 at Bedle's (Beedle's) Station and the platted town of Deerfield, and Lebanon was established as the county seat by 1805. Once an agricultural county built on grain, livestock and small manufacturing towns along the Little Miami and Warren County canals and the Little Miami Railroad, the county's southern townships have become part of the Cincinnati metropolitan suburban belt since the late 20th century while Lebanon and the northern county retain a rural and small-town character.
Lebanon was selected as the county seat by 1805. A permanent courthouse was built there in 1806 for $1,450; it was replaced in 1835 by a second courthouse built at a cost of $25,000 and renovated in 1998, while the 1806 building was given to the town as a Town Hall and was destroyed by fire in 1874. Also in Lebanon, the Golden Lamb, licensed December 23, 1803 by innkeeper Jonas Seaman as 'a house of Public Entertainment,' is Ohio's oldest hotel and longest continuously operating business; it was rebuilt in brick in 1815 and has hosted twelve U.S. presidents.

The Loveland Frog
Witnesses around Loveland have described frog-faced figures since 1955. In March 1972, two police officers reported a frog-like creature near the Little Miami River. One of them said at the time it was probably an iguana.

The Crosswick Serpent
In May 1882, a newspaper reported that a scaly beast 30 to 40 feet long grabbed a boy fishing at Crosswick, near Waynesville. Quarrymen made it drop him. Sixty men with axes and dogs gave chase. It got away.
