How Clearcreek Township, Warren County began
Clearcreek Township was organized in 1817 in the north-central part of Warren County and takes its name from Clear Creek, its principal stream. It covers 45.8 square miles bordering Montgomery County to the north and Wayne Township to the east, and it contains the crossroads communities of Five Points, Pekin, Red Lion, Ridgeville, and Utica, along with the county's highest point near Five Points. Much of the township's western edge has been annexed into the city of Springboro, and several early farmsteads scattered through the township's countryside, including the Henry Decker Farmstead, the Stanton farm, and the Jonathan Crane Farm, are individually listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Incorporated October 17, 1815 (some sources give 1817), by county commissioners, from parts of Franklin and Wayne townships.
Where the name comes from
The township was named for Clear Creek, the stream running through it.
Before the town
No Native American village, trail, mound or treaty line specific to Clearcreek Township itself is recorded. The township lies within land ceded at the Treaty of Greenville (1795) that had been Shawnee and Miami hunting and settlement territory before Ohio statehood.
Timeline
- — The Clear Creek Baptist Church, near Ridgeville, is established with Rev. James Sutton as first minister, claimed to be the first church organized in the county; a branch forms in Turtle Creek Township in 1798.
- — The Associate Reformed Church is organized about this year, with Rev. David Risk as first pastor; its hewn-log house on the site of the Springboro cemetery is replaced by brick in 1818.
- — The first German Reformed church, of logs, is built about this year on what became Robert Eyer's farm southeast of Springboro.
- — Fergus McLean, father of Judge John McLean of the U.S. Supreme Court, lays out Ridgeville; Jonathan Wright lays out Springboro in 1816 and Abner Crane lays out Westfield, later Red Lion, in 1817.
- — On October 17 the county commissioners erect Clear Creek Township from parts of Franklin (two-thirds) and Wayne townships, named for its main stream; the voting place is at Ridgeville until 1855, when the township is split into two precincts.
- — Francis Glass, a classical scholar, opens a school at Springboro, later followed by Richard Way and Noah Leeds; at the October 8 election 210 votes are polled.
- — The township's population is 2,821; Springboro has 417.
- — The Universalist church at Springboro is dedicated before a crowd estimated at 3,000, so many that the exercises move to a nearby grove; the Ridgeville Universalists build in 1846.
- — A hurricane on St. Patrick's Day night demolishes the Methodist church at Ridgeville, a night after an exhibition by pupils had crowded it.
- — Miami Valley College is established near Springboro by liberal-minded persons, chiefly Friends, to combine mental and manual training for both sexes on a sixty-acre farm.
- — The township's population is 2,789 (Springboro 553); 13 churches serve it; the township's 1880 crops include about 735,000 pounds of tobacco and 1,260,000 pounds of pork.
- — The Jonathan Crane Farm in the township is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, on February 17.
- — The Stanton Farm, tied to the abolitionist Stanton family, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, on May 29.
- — The Henry Decker Farmstead is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, on September 8.
Stories
Farmsteads that outlasted the township that held them
Three of Clearcreek Township's old farms are on the National Register of Historic Places: the Jonathan Crane Farm (1978), the Stanton Farm (1980) and the Henry Decker Farmstead (2000). The Stanton Farm is tied to the abolitionist Stanton family.
Wrightstown becomes Springboro
When Jonathan Wright, a Quaker who came to Ohio in 1814, laid out his village in 1816, someone suggested it be called Wrightstown in his honor; Wright objected and proposed Springboro, and the name was adopted. Buyers of lots had to agree that no liquor be sold on the premises for ten years, and the county history says no saloon was kept in that part of town until Job Carr's Addition, which had no such restriction, let liquor sellers in and Springboro 'lost her good name.' The Friends first met at Wright's house, the township had a school for colored youth by 1882, and the Miami Valley College of 1870 followed the Friends' belief in combining study with farm and shop labor. Red Lion, laid out as Westfield in 1817, took its name from the red lion rampant painted on the sign of Bolly's hotel.
