How Clermont County began

Clermont County was organized on December 6, 1800, by proclamation of territorial Governor Arthur St. Clair, taking its name from the French for "clear mountain" in honor of France's help at Yorktown. Lying entirely within the Virginia Military District, the tract Virginia set aside to pay its Revolutionary War veterans in land, the county was surveyed in irregular metes and bounds rather than the square-mile grid used elsewhere in Ohio, and its seat moved twice, from Williamsburgh to New Richmond in 1823 and finally to Batavia in 1824. Its Ohio River and Little Miami valley lands lay within the hunting and travel range of the Shawnee, Miami and Wyandot before the Treaty of Greenville's 1795 cession, and the largest frontier fight recorded in the county, the April 1792 Battle of Grassy Run between Simon Kenton and a Shawnee camp that included the young Tecumseh, took place on ground where a Wyandot village still stood as late as 1811. The county is also known as the birthplace of Ulysses S. Grant, born at Point Pleasant in 1822, and today holds nine National Register-listed prehistoric archaeological sites tied to the Hopewell and other Woodland-period mound-building cultures along the Little Miami and Ohio rivers.

The Loveland Frog

Witnesses around Loveland have described frog-faced figures since 1955. In March 1972, two police officers reported a frog-like creature near the Little Miami River. One of them said at the time it was probably an iguana.
